135i Diet

Ok since this car will consume most of my money that I have saved up I'm going to be limited on modifications. Being as I live in Florida, tint is a mandatory thing, so that will be first.

What I'm more interested in, is shaving weight from this baby. I plan on removing the spare tire and all the hardware that goes with it, along with anything else in the trunk that can be ditched.

Is anyone else planning on doing anything to get their 135i ready for the 2008 bikini season? If so what are you planning on gutting out of your car to lose some lbs?

Run flats are supposed to be standard, so there is no spare.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to replace the run-flat tires and factory wheels with lighter, sportier options. BMW might offer a sunroof delete option (already been discussed ad nauseam). Of course, you could be like some weight freaks and buy a carbon fiber roof, but that is outrageously expensive to install. The cheapest mod a lot us could make, though, would be to shed some pounds ourselves.

Light wheels, esp. in the 18" size, are typically not cheap. I was looking at the OZ ulltraleggas - good looks, fairly light weight at
18.5 lbs for an 18x8. They are $325 a piece. To me, that is pretty pricey for rims, but I come from miata and MINI world, so take that for what it is worth!

Good luck!

I was very suprised what C&D reported in their M3 story in Sept. 07 issue. The carbon fiber roof on the M3 saved ONLY 11 lbs over steel. For those thinking of this, that is an extremely expensive 11 lbs. Results may vary, but you could get that by just not filling the gas tank to the top.

Well that's 11lbs at the highest point of the car. Torque = length x force.

That's why I never buy a sunroof

Buy a alu or CF bonnet, lighter rims and tires, replace the front seats with lightweight racing seats, remove the AC compressor and rad... Not sure what else you can do on this one that's not very pricey (like CF roof) or involves major interior downgrading.

I agree completly, and that is still a very expensive 11 lbs. I will probably forego the sunroof, if possible, for that reason. Every sun roof I have ever had I didn't use. The new exhausts for the 335i save 38 lbs. over stock. However, as you say, it is in the lowest point in the car.

as long as there isn't a brake clearance issue, i'll probably do 17" rims.

saves money on tires, too.

The real weight savings on a cf/alum roof panel would come if there is no sunroof delete option and we're stuck with having one. course you'd still have to pay a decent price for the custom headliner, fab, install, paint, etc.

be looking to see if some 17s can fit over the brakes. save money on wheels and tires that could be put towards something else.

taking out the a/c and radiator if you dont use it. lightweight racing seats. replace the backseats with carpeting...replace all interior panels with CF ($$$)

Lightweight wheels and losing the runflats will easily get you to lose 50+ lbs of rotating mass, which is HUGE. It will be the easiest way to get some real benefit from a mod, without risking your warranty or chopping up your car.

I replaced the runflats and 18" sport package wheels on my e90 330i with 17", wider/lighter non-runflat, non-staggered, and lost 90 lbs of rotating mass (mostly only for DEs and Autox). The throttle response difference was incredible. Braking is better too.

D-Force LTW5's 17x9 (16.3 lbs each) with 255/40/17 Yokohama Advan Neova AD07's. They are not the best looking wheels, but look a LOT better (and are wider) than Kosei K1 Racing.

You guys are forgeting two-piece rotors also. With those huge brakes, that will shed some weight. Also, lightweight battery will shed some pounds too.

Just be careful where you loose the weight. BMW engineers worked hard on getting the weight distribution set up for a particular driving experience. You start shedding weight from the rear only, you will throw that off.
