DC Roads Claimed Another Soul... (wheel toasted)

Was already in a rush this morning and taking my usual commute up 16th in Silver Spring MD. It's a 3 lane road and the right two lanes have bad potholes so I always slide all the way to the left lane quickly to avoid them right when i get on the road.

Well, overnight or sometime yesterday a solid microwave-sized pothole opened up and filled with water in the left lane, the water masking just how deep it was. Dipped into it with my back left wheel and took a gnarly chunk out of the wheel's rim. Getting some pics reviewed to see if it's repairable now, they don't make these wheels anymore so if it's totally toasted it's going to mean a full new set

That's crappy!

Sorry that happened to you and hope insurance will cover as a no-fault claim. Fight if you need to.

This wheel is done, this can't be repaired safely.

That is a bummer, Matt. And didn't you just paint them, too?

Oh well, guess it's time for another upgrade.

Yeah thanks man we'll see what happens, might not be worth the claim but I'm exploring options.

That's the worst. I've somehow managed to keep my wheels scuff free for two years now. I have my daily commute completely memorized as to where imperfections in the roads are, but sometimes there's just no avoiding it. Hopefully you can find a way to salvage those wheels -- I hardly ever see them on 1ers and they look great on yours!

That sucks! I wish your wheel well, maybe you can convince Avant Garde to make another one for you...

When buying aftermarket wheels, buy 5 (for this exact reason)

Thanks man and yeah I've had tires go on me but never a wheel like this, especially where the tire still held air!

Lol not really the best solution, more so when you consider these are staggered, so i'd have to buy a set of 6!

Glad to hear that! You're back in business.

I've had the same wheels since 2011 without any damage. Don't know how I've managed that. Lots of luck, I guess.

Granted, I don't have the same weather ravaged roads that you have. I have dodged my share of potholes, though. lol

Bring the picture of the wheel and receipt to the city and try to get reimbursed.
Some cities will. Worth a shot

Fat chance. DC is all about extorting money with as many ways as they can. With that mentality, do you really think they would pay out anything on this? At one point, they wanted to put up toll booths to enter into the city.

I hate going into the DC. I only go to a select few spots if I have to. When you enter the city, that weird sensation you're feeling near your hip/thigh isn't some sort of health issue. It's DC trying to pick pocket the money out of your wallet. Between the overly aggressive meter maids (along with the worst signage to trap you into violations), to virtually a speed camera on every block, to the same aggressiveness with red light cameras which coincidentally have awfully short yellows, you'll be lucky to make it out of there without paying the DC visit tax.

You'd think with all that money they're making they could fix the roads so our fellow 1ADDICT wouldn't land in one of their potholes and total his wheel.

That is the rub, DC is perpetually broke. It is a combination of gross mismanagement, and Congress way underfunding the city.

To add to what Jim has said, you have rampant nepotism and wide spread corruption. Heck, the school system couldn't account for a few million dollars that just went missing. Yet no one went to jail over this. How can that be? And when someone is installed into a position of power to do something, the person eventually gets pushed out.

I think the answer is to bring back Marion Berry as mayor, give everyone free crack and then nobody will give a fuck if they screw up their car.
