Dodged a bullet today

So my warranty expires next month and I was worried about the repair costs. I always had a grinding second gear shift on high RPMs. Read multiple forums and understood it's a BMW thing. Anyway decided to ask the dealer to check it out - as it turns out I need a new transmission.

Also they found a leak on Oil filter housing Gasket and oil pan gasket.

Big shout out to my service adviser Christelle at United BMW Roswell !! I've had my requests for OFHG leaks turned down for my 335i at the same dealer - but a different SA. I guess it all comes down to your SA.

I had the same issue on second with my car, also needed a new trans. Was a ~$5k repair that cost me $300 out of pocket after my deductible and sales tax!! OFHG is also a very common issue. Have them look everything over while you're still covered!!

I'd also recommend having them do a CDV delete while they're working on the trans, no extra labor and you'll love the pedal feel.

Heck if there is ANY doubt about the clutch just pay them to put one in while the tranny is out. Minimal labor at that point.

When my engine was out for post OFGH screw up replacement at 52K I had a new clutch put in. Not much extra money since it was all apart anyways.

The clutch feels pretty solid at this time. I wanted to CDV delete at some point by myself. Do you think a BMW dealer will do? I mean I can pay - but will a dealer bound by liability and other red tape do it?

If the car is out of warranty I doubt they'll care

BTW, are you happy with the new transmission? How's the second gear shift now?

Worlds better. I had them do the CDV delete and i put in the BMS clutch stopper myself when they did the work, the trans feels 100x better overall. Buttery smooth and doesn't grind no matter how quickly I shift. I've "tipped" the gears a few times when being lazy admittedly, but that's not fault of the machine, just my own.

I should mention, if you are looking to get a new trans see if you can get Redline ATF put in, there's a few threads on this and the suggestion originally came to me from Dackelone. I wasn't able to do this since my warranty company wanted all OEM stuff put in but from what I've heard that fluid makes it even better than the stock stuff. I'll probably swap mine out for that when the time comes for a fluid change (50k miles from now probably, or whenever I do the clutch).

Here's a thread on that topic

Thanks Matticus. Funny thing I already bought the redline ATF and was planning a DIY. At the last moment decided to check with the dealer about the grinding. Hopefully I'll change out the fluids before winter.

That's a great idea. Especially on a new box. When you drain the trans, drain it through a white cone-style coffee filter. that will make you glad you went through the effort of changing the fluid.
