You did good. It would’ve been fun be he was going to walk you.

Love to hear that, sounds like JOY.

Is the M3 LSD the only offering you've heard of or the only one you'd get?

I'm an idiot. I have no idea, there are other options out there. I understand that with the M3 LSD you would need a custom drive shaft - sounds expensive.

All I know is that I can't really push the car without traction control slowing me down. I like traction control as I prefer not to total my car. But ultimately I prefer traction.

Ship your diff to Whitbread and have him put in a Wavetrac.
Whitbread performance out of Michigan. Couldn’t be happier with the work he did and his billet diff cover is a masterpiece.

That would work. Personally, I’m thinking Quaife because of my DCT and because there is a rumor that Dinan used to sell their LSD pumpkins with Quaife in them.

Thanks. What does the Wavetrac do, exactly? Does it require software mods? What did it cost and how long did it take?

A Wavetrac is just one brand/kind of LSD. There are videos showing how their's works vs others.

It is a torsen-style torque-biasing design that uses gears to achieve limited slip. As long as both wheels have at least some traction, torque will naturally flow to the wheel with more; instead of taking the path of least resistance. I think some Z4s were the only bimmers to come with this type of differential from the factory.

I used to have a N55 135i with wavetrac, and it was a nice setup; definitely reduced the lack of traction and does not interfere with traction control (no software mods required). If you have access to a lift, it shouldn't take more than 4-6 hours to R&R. If you haven't taken your exhaust out before, be careful to align the mid-pipe to rear section when reinstalling; it is easy to strip the nut or bend the bolt on reassembly.

The E9x M3 comes with a GKN unit (same as the dodge viper) that uses a hydraulic pump to actuate the friction plates. To make space for the pump, the stub shaft on the pump side is shorter than the non-pump side. This (and stress from quickly transitioning from no-traction to full lock) leads to uneven wear and eventually failure of the bearings/seal or differential mount bolt.

Why is Quaife better than Wavetrac for DCT applications? And how would a Quaife install work? Would you ship your diff to them in the U.K.?

I could not and would not say that it is better. I have zero experience with either. (Can of worms) I don’t think there was always other options for the DCT’s because of the drive ratio.
Quaife would be my choice though because I trust Dinan. While they would not, extremely unfortunately and disappointingly, confirm Quaife to be the insides of their former product; my research gives me confidence that it was and that Quaife has a good product. The two brands on my car are Genuine BMW and Dinan. I will keep it that way, even if it means no LSD for me.

I’m not confident, but I have the assumption that the manufacturers do not touch the case or car. I assume third parties will either assemble the LSD and case (precision work that should be carefully considered) or install the assembly (any mechanic shop, I suppose?) or both! It’s possible to order a case already put together with or without sending yours in. It is your decision to pay for a core or not.

It's interesting that the Supra is a Toyota/BMW collaboration, as I understand. I know the Supra GT has a 3.0 liter turbocharged in-line six. Is that the "BMW" part of the collaboration?

There's more than that. The engine used in the Supra is a B58. And if you've been following the B58, it's a stout engine that is mod friendly plus has stock power ratings have been very conservative. The interior of the Supra is also BMW with BMW iDrive, HVAC controls, etc. I think the Toyota part is in helping with the overall development of the platform such as chassis tuning.

Unless you have a highly modified N55, I personally think that Supra would have walked you if not given you a good run. If the owner of that Supra modified it, even mildly, forget it.

Absolutely fantastic, thanks. Beast.

Next project is Quaife LSD and 1M exhaust. It's somewhere down on my list of "stuff to do"...

Sorry I don't think I ever answered the question. Cost was ~$3k including labor at the dealer.

Just to be clear, the car has changed ownership and is now in the hands of an enthusiast. She will be missed!
