Plasti Dipped My Rims/Grill
Hey guys,
I've been snooping around these forums for a few months now and figured I'd finally try to contribute. Anyway I bought a CPO'd 08 135i last December after much research and this past Saturday I plasti dipped both my rims and grills. It was my first real project (other than putting in angel eyes) on the car so I was a bit apprehensive. Anyway, here are pictures! Let me know what you think. Also, anyone have recommendations for blacking out my tail lights? Other than spray-on tint... Setup First Layer The Grills Even did the license plate holder cuz there were chrome.. Rims Done Onto the front ones.. Grills Done Final Product |

Looks good! I did my wheels a while back as well. I'd suggest http://www.lamin-x.com/BMW-1-Series-...d-up-s/794.htm

Looks good. Is it a smooth glossy finish or is it more like the Rhino lining they spray in truck beds? I wonder how it will hold up when you get new tires installed. That Lever on the tire machine that goes around the edge of the rim and pulls the tire bead may lift the Plasti coat. Do you think this will happen?
I put my winter tire/wheel setup away last year without cleaning them. Over the summer some crystal like structures grew in the clear coat and trashed the finish. Perhaps Plasti Coat would be good for these wheels.

My wheels are plastidipped and yes, the finish gets scraped off around the edges when getting new tires put on...I guess it's best to just plan on recoating with each set of new tires...still worth the time IMO as the finish does look really nice and it's inexpensive...first post BTW, it's good to be here

Looks good...did you use Plasti dip international product or other? I noticed they can match any color...thinking of changing my Winter set up to gunmetal.

Yep just went to Lowe's and bought the generic plastidip. You can buy other colors online from them too I think. |

Does plati-dip bond to clear coat?
If not, then I don't think it will hold up to rocks hitting the rims. Other than that the blacked out look, looks really good. |

my first thought.....they pop out so easy, even i attempted this. Overall pretty pretty nice job..my son did his black car in gunmetal with paint. and it looks quite nice as well VS my $300 to powdercoat my wheels..but then again a powdercoat job is what it is....

ah, let me guess. You are Asian living near Tenafly! The houses actually look like Fort Ree.
Hi neighbor! The job looks good in the photos. Let us know how it looks in a few months! Can you get the paint in gunmetal?

awesome, im waiting for my can of smoke plasti dip to arrive...
this is great stuff, it peels right off after a few very thin coats so dont remove any parts on the car...tape for a bit of overspray and peel off at end. Ive used it a few times, recently did a brand new Ram 3500 grill and bumper. Went back and forth from NY to florida, no problem at all. No Pressure wash, Hand wash with micro fiber towel...

Their website shows a new color....smoked. I might buy a can and start spraying shit to see if its close to gunmetal I like the fact that you can pull the coating off with very little effort.

Haha Palisades Park to be exact. I could have sworn I saw gunmetal colors on dipyourcar.com a few months ago but they don't seem to have it on there...

Gonna do this to my winter set...I think.
+1 to the posters that said you should have just taken your grills out. It does only take two seconds. Is your radiator covered in plastidip now? |

Looks good man. For the tails, the Lamin-x will work as suggested. You might also look into either the blacklines as noted or having them painted professionally. I had mine shot with a few thin coats of black mixed with clear, then cleared again for about $125 (including 3rd brake light and sidemarkers). The result is a dark cherry color, not completely blacked-out. Finish is smooth and can be waxed to shine up.
Good luck with what you decide, and kuddos on the DIY route (but damn man, the grills pop out easy)!.

Did you use the Plasti dip glossifier? For an extra like 10 bucks you can give your rims an extra shine and protective layer. Ive been using plasti dip for some while now and I am never dissapointed. We just did my buddys, e46 325ci, mags with metalizer and they look phenomenal, and also black out the kidney grills.
Looks good! |
