Shifter vibration in 2nd gear past 3500rpm only?
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this. The shifter is vibrating in 2nd gear, as the rpm gets higher. Doesn't do it in any other gear, and isn't making any weird noises. All other gears it doesn't do it.
Anyone else noticed anything similar? 6-speed manual 128i. Last edited by wolfe; 10-13-2011 at 06:54 PM.. |

Hmm, my shifter vibrates ALL the time (2012 6-speed 128i) -- idle, while accelerating, always. I thought this was a little weird at first but just wrote it off as "normal". Is this bad?

It has a little vibration always, it just wobbles front to back sometimes in 2nd. Seems to do it more when hot, but is almost completely random. It's a little more reproducible if I take the revs higher in first and shift quickly, but even then it doesn't always do it.
If I keep on it in 2nd, the shifter vibrates faster and faster with speed, but then it pretty much goes away by about 5500. All other gears do have a little vibration, but they're about equal. |

Perhaps you have a bad motor mount. ?
I replaced both motor mounts on my old e36, I was shocked when one of them was in two pieces and the other one was leaking oil. I was just replacing them bc they were seven years old at that time and new mounts were cheap (40 euros each). I only had a little bit of vibrations. Its my experince that nothing make an old car feel like a new one than new motor mounts and say new shocks. |

Definitely worth checking, thanks. I loosened and retorqued the transmission mounts, didn't seem to change much.
I'm wondering if the center support bearing, driveshaft, or even a wheel balance is worth looking at too. It's just so bizarre how it happens at random. |
