Ac not working? Leak but not sure where

So my ac isn't working in my 128i.

My cousins put refrigerant in it and f*#%ing stop leak, for no reason.

I can smell something coming from vents now that was not previously there, and the Indy I spoke to said that the stop leak could kill the compressor or I think he said expansion valve?? The Indy shop also said to have the system drained but he wouldn't touch it with the stop leak.

It's blowing cold now lol but I'm worried.

Any advice?

Evaporators are fairly prone to leaking and if you smell it through the vent, that's the likely culprit. I'm not sure what to do about the stop leak. I don't know if you can ever truly get that stuff out. There are a couple posts about replacing an evaporator. Suffice it to say, it's probably one of the most annoying repairs you can make.

I think most of the DIY refrigerants have stop leak in them. My AC started blowing warm on the driver side, getting smelly etc. and it's super hot here so having AC is required! Didn't want to spend a bunch of money getting a pro to do it so I used EZ Chill Refrigerant and it worked OK. I didn't have to replace anything and it's still blowing pretty cool but I am going to refill again before it gets super hot!

My leak was in the high-pressure hose. A lot less expensive to replace than the evaporator.

I’m in the same boat. Put some of the UV dye in it and can’t find a single spec of green anywhere. Hugely frustrating. No smell on the interior at all so I’m fairly certain it’s not the evaporator. Took half the dash and engine bay apart with my dad today trying to chase even a single drop of dye. Nothing.

When it works, it works perfectly, so the compressor/clutch are just fine.

Grumble grumble... this car has been nearly trouble free other than a coil pack and a serpentine belt.

Subscribed in hopes for cold AC.

Update: UV dye was useless, purchased a Freon sniffer to find that yep, the evaporator has kicked the bucket. Gonna pull the dash and get the parts ordered. Ugh.
