BMW 118i E87 oil sensor

So I just hit the 186411 miles mark on my car and my oil sensor died on my 2007 118i (E87)
I bought another one from Ebay and replaced the old one. The new one says it's inactive. When I use the stalk to check the oil level on my dash, the oil level category says it's inactive. Is there something I need to do to activate the oil sensor or is it just dead /broken? Perhaps it was never functional?
