The e46 M3 gill is functional too - connects to the wheel well. I had one blow off at 135mph. On track of course.

Yes. And they were supposed to have air ducts connected to them from behind the brake calipers to vent off hot air from the brakes.

The lack of a functional vent on the M2 is embarrassing. BMW should have left it off or done something similar to the 1M.

Are they even functional anymore or are they just for looks? Absolutely hate when shit isn't functional.

Like virtually every 'diffuser' on modern cars.

It's like the "hood vents" they put on so many cars now. A joke.

I dunno. I don’t think anyone would look at the M2’s “vent” and think it was actually pretending to be functional. I’d hesitate to even call it a “vent” or a “grille” because I just think it’s a design flourish that pays homage to the real vents on previous M cars without trying to look like something it isn’t. In other words, I like it.

I will update the list at a later time with some of the ones missed and will continue to add to it future models.
The tough part, really, is finding a photo of the correct angle, with decent resolution, and then cropping it the same ratio as the others.

But I will work on this and update the original post as time progresses

Well, let's see .... there was the E24 M6, the M1, the E28 M5, the E39 M5, the E30 M3, the E36 M3 and maybe more that had no side grills.
