I just got my 3g snap in from dan. I believe from the quote above that now it will work if i unplug my ipod, but what is the freakin' point?
Plus it says this accessory is not made for this phone when i connect it !!!! How could they go through the trouble to design a cradle and then have it give that error. L

I have the 6NF option so I play music and podcasts off my iphone directly. I had all my music loaded on the car HDD from my old ipod but I deleted it all the other day in order to reload a different playlist. Unfortunately the USB in the glovebox won't recognise my iPhone even though it recognises my ipod. Anyone else had this issue? I'm just using the standard cable, perhaps I should try the special one BMW gave me...

The snap-in adapter concept is puzzling. What happens when the next iPhone appears in (probably) June and it's not compatible with the current part?
I remember having a similar cradle setup in an E53 X5 using a Motorola CPT-9000 (I think). I had it for a few years and watched as mobile phone technology pass me by. I was hesitant to switch because of my investment. Same thing happened with a '95 Range Rover and a Motorola Star Tac with car kit. Instead of an adapter, I'd like to see a cable that connects the car to the phone via the Smartphone Integration connector. It may not be as tidy, but it would account for form factor changes, third-party cases, etc. and would be a lot cheaper. |

Any chance of getting a picture of the connector on the bottom of the adapter?

I thought I should revive this thread because I'm very curious about this option as well, the BMW website doesn't say anything about it.
Basically I want to be able to connect my iPhone, use it as a phone, charge it, and play the music on it (as an iPod of course). Is the Smartphone Integration all I need? I was going for the USB/iPod option but I'm aware that won't let you use the phone and you will have to store it in the glovebox while connected... |

Just click no? It's telling you that IF you do turn it on you won't be able to make/receive calls but that's obvious.

Yeap I'm pretty sure that's all it's for, to have your phone hidden and charging, you should be able to use that cradle to listen to music from it too.
As far as using it for making calls you need to have the BMW Assist option and still connect via Bluetooth, don't quote me on that though. |

Once you edit an address, it is stored in the iDrive address book, no changes are made on the phone. From then on, you can just use the one in the iDrive, not the one in the phone, and it will work then. |

WOW... thanks to the original poster and for the folks that posted pic. You guys just saved me $150. From what I read, the "smartphone integration" is really only a convenience feature. I.e. - it doesn't offer any new features except that it "may" provide better reception from what BMW claims. I highly doubt it as it sounds more like a marketing gimmick. If I wanted to play music through my phone, I simply plug it into the AUX or USB interface. If I wanted to make calls, I can still do so through the Bluetooth feature (yikes at $750). I suppose the USB plug won't charge the iPhone, but the play time for the iPhone is long enough for me (several hours).

6NF is $150, but then you need the cradle for your specific model phone, and that's another $150 extra.

Correct! WOW, WHAT A RIPOFF! Reminds me of when Porsche was charging $750 for...get this.... footwell lighting on a Boxster. That's 2 bulbs!

Real dumb question here; correct me if I'm wrong, is the bluetooth option different from the smart phone integration?

Yes, they are different. BMW Assist (Bluetooth) is used for voice calling.

I ordered my car with Bluetooth handsfree and USB, but not the snap in adaptor. My understanding is that this is only for charging the phone - not for playing music. I would love it to be both.
If I am wrong, and someone else has it working, then please let me know! |

I have the USB port option, but apparently i need to either use the AUX in for the sound or use a memory stick - you can't just plug in the iphone and go (can you?)...
