Where to put a fire extinguisher.

I'm looking to do some track time with the Porsche club in the beginning of August but they require a fire extinguisher to be mounted inside of your car.

Does anyone have an extinguisher mounted in their daily driver. I can't think of a place where to drill holes and mount this thing. Any ideas?
I run with NASA and the BMW club but never had to buy an extinguisher.

Please help me out if you track you DD and have installed one before.

Thanks!

Try underneath your passenger seat.

BMW makes factory brackets for under the seat for almost every model. I had one in my old E36/5 (looked great, did not interfere with seat).

They don't sell the brackets through US dealers, so you need to buy from someone who imported it, such as:

I've got the BMW bracket and highly recommend it. I leave the extinguisher in the car all the time and it is very unobtrusive because of how it is mounted.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you - looking forward to my first outing with PCA in the middle of August. I'm a regular BMWCCA lapper, but this whole extinguisher thing has thrown me for a loop.

I've been trying to find a local solution, either OEM or aftermarket, but no luck yet. I can order the OEM, but it needs to come from Germany and will cost me over $100. Finally decided on talking to a fabricator friend of mine, and we're going to attempt something like the ECS mount this weekend - I'll let you know how it goes.

What did you end up with?

Just for reference in case the seat rail spacing is the same as E9x there's this bracket from VAC:

http://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-...e9x-p2681.aspx

FWIW I have one installed and it doesn't interfere with passengers' feet. It's an E90 328i but it should give a sense of scale anyway. The extinguisher is a potassium bicarbonate type (Purple K) usually preferred for track use.

OEM isn't worth it considering a) hard to get b) quite expensive for what it is c) most clubs require a 2.5lb halon with metal to metal hardware and d) if you ever are in a situation where you need an extinguisher, you'd like to know you have more foam than what's in that tiny oem extinguisher

Is this a new requirement for all cars? I ran with pca earlier this season and there was no mention of needing a fire extinguisher

Varies by region. PCA by me only requires extinguisher if you're in advanced/instructor group.

Thread revival time.

Anyone find an alternative to the VAC passenger-seat bracket, that is more subtle? I find that it sticks out too much.

Although not as accessible, is having the extinguisher mounted in the trunk/boot recommended?

I find the OEM one kind of tiny, and too expensive ...

Thanks Ryan.

I just placed my order for a bracket with Kap Industries. Russell is a nice guy to deal with.

You can put a normal extinguisher on the OEM bracket. That is what I had for years, was pretty unobtrusive.

Thanks for the tip!!!
I received mine in Texas in about a week and a half.
It took me a few days to get around to mounting it.
I'll be replacing it with a larger extinguisher before too long, but for now this will work.
The best thing was the exchange rate.
It only cost me about US$45.
Here are some pics: (Wow, I didn't realize how dirty my carpet was until I looked at the pics. The photo make it look much worse than it really is. I'm gonna have to do some cleaning this weekend!)

Our fire extinguisher is mounted on the top of back of the drivers side rear seat.
When racing the back seat is laid forward so that the fire extinguisher is within easy reach.
