Helmet
I did a search, but not much info. My son and I are looking to do some Autocross and drivers education (PCA) and are obviously required to have helmets.
Can anyone recommend brand and model that is reasonably priced (and where to purchase)? If his interests continues, we will upgrade down the road. Thanks

Pyrotect
Pyrotect BF1-R8 open face Snell SA2010. Strongly recommend open face vice closed and its MANDATORY to have Snell SA2010 certification. Note the model number (BF1-R8) may have changed since I bought mine.

Thanks Northern Dancer. We have to have closed face, but I will check out the Pyrotect options.

I personally like the closed face options (read: I've had flying rubber hit my helmet INSIDE the car before)
I run a HJC AR-10 Helmet - $300 HJC SA helmets are a completely different animal versus the motorcycled versions. Very nice quality helmets. Whatever you get make sure it's SA Make sure you test fit in person before you order. Sizes vary from manufacture to manufacture. It needs to fit properly. |

If you are only doing autoX you probably don't need to have an SA rated helmet. Every club I have ever raced with allows M rated helmets. I wouldn't drop $400 on a Bell SA helmet for your 1st few years if you aren't on a road course. You can usually find an M2010 for less than $100.
If there are places around you where you can try them on and support a local vendor that is awesome. If you can't find anywhere locally check out soloracer.com and saferacer.com SA2010 - http://soloracer.com/prosport.html ($189) M rated - http://www.saferacer.com/hjc-cs-r2-s...orcycle-helmet ($89) If you go into a road race shop they will talk you though fitment but it is suppose to be tight enough to be tolerable not necessarily comfortable.

I bought this Bell from Speedway a few years back. I'm pretty happy with it.

Our local PCA requires SA. I am not sure about BMW CCA, but since we will probably do both, I will get us the SA. I found a few for not much more than a $100, but going to look for a local shop as I agree with supporting the local guys.

I have a Bell M4 because the HJC AR-10 was very uncomfortable for my head. Helmets are one of those items that varies greatly depending on the person, so I would recommend for you to go to a place that has helmets for you to try on prior to committing.

FWIW, I have an Arai SAH2010 GP-J3 with different cheek pads although I forget which ones. Will be replacing it with an Arai SAH2015 GP-5W and having it modified to add an IMSA headset. Not really sure if the peak should be replaced with a visor for eye protection. And they're SAH for use with a HANS, Pro 20 specifically which needs to be ordered with the new helmet. Already verified I can climb in and out of the car while wearing my current helmet with a Pro 20 HANS (borrowed from the team driver) with the wheel off and race shell all the way back so it's not an unknown anyway.
