Battery registration 1 series no listed

Hey guys,

I know this subject has perhaps been beaten to death and I did spend a significant amount of time researching, but I cannot find any lists that mention the 1 series batteries needing to be registered. I'll post the standard list found on many sights below. I know it's best to be safe than sorry, but if I can save the 50-100 bucks, it's at least worth asking.

The following late-model vehicles require battery registration:

· 2002 and newer 7-Series E65/E66 chassis
· 2003 and newer 6-Series E54/E63 chassis
· 2004 and newer 5-Series E60/E61 chassis
· 2006 and newer 3-Series E90/E91/E92/E93 chassis
· 2005 and newer X5 E53 chassis with N62 engine
· 2007 and newer X5 E70 chassis
· 2008 and newer X6 E71 chassis

Yeah it needs to be registered. You can do it easily with BMWhat/Carly. Also for future reference you can lump E82 together with E90 for a lotta things (maintenance and aftermarket parts, usually) - E82 uses a significant amount of parts from E90.

That webpage was probably typed before the 1 series came out and they never updated the models.

E8x is considered an E9x when it comes to coding. The 1 series needs registration upon battery change

Hmm... My son had his battery replaced recently, no registration at all (local garage shop did it); no problems at all.

2011 128i.

What are we missing?

You're missing the registration...

In all seriousness the shop made a mistake, it needs to be registered. Your car is smart, and it alters the way it charges the battery over time to prolong battery health. By not registering it, the car thinks it has (I assume this was the first change, so) a 5 year old battery vs a brand new one. Registration is a simple step to tell the car the battery is new so it prolongs the life. If you changed the amp hour rating or type of battery, this info needs to be coded to the car. There is tons of info about this on both this forum, E90 post, and the internet.

Not sure what comfort access is, so I'm going with his 128i doesn't have it.

My local shop doesn't have tools to "register" the battery, as far as I know.

BMW does some annoying things, that's for sure. Sounds like they're forcing us to go to a dealer and spend $300 for a $100 battery...

You can do it yourself relatively inexpensively. Use the BMW Carly app.

You can certainly replace a battery without registering it, but it's best practice to register the new battery. And it's not just BMW, this practice is becoming more widespread.

Here's a good article, there is thought and reason behind this, it's not a way to force you back to the dealership. Plenty of independent shops can do this for you, the software is essentially free to the consumer now.
