Will it rub?

Does anyone know if Michelin Pilot Super Sports 225/45/18 and 255/40/18 will rub on a 1-series? Stock sizes are 215/40/18 and 245/35/18.

Will be mounting on style 313 wheels.

225/45/18 - If you are running the OEM fenders with anything less than OEM ride height, they will rub. They will rub on the OEM shock tower and most likely any coil overs as well. 225/40R18 is what I run in the front and I have to use a 5mm spacer so that the tire doesn't rub on my coil overs. On hard cornering, the tires can rub on the inside of the fenders but not a noticeable issue (minus my wrap being eaten off the inside lip). My car is lowered 0.5" or 1" (I forget what OEM height is) in the front.

255/40/18 - I do not believe these will be a problem in the rear. It will be a taller and wider tire/wheel setup from OEM but I run 255/35R18 rear and there is quite a lot of room still, so I THINK you will be okay here.

Should fit fine.

Can you even buy Michelin Pilot Super Sports(PSS) anymore? I would get some PS4 or PS4S tires in those same sizes.

I am running PS4 225 and 255's on my 135i... no rubbing!

My new Michelin PS3’s 225’s & 255’s…

Why would you want to increase your tire diameter? There’s almost a 5% increase both front and rear for the sizes you mention.

I live in Western Mass where the roads are horrid and so having a larger profile (both, an even increase on front and rear) would be less harsh on the beautifully forged 313 rims when the unavoidable occasion of hitting a pothole occurs.

They are discontinued but it seems that tirerack still sells them. A quick search does indicate the superiority of the PS4S over the PSS...

I mean, you MIGHT get what you’re looking for but your speedo/mileage will be off by a fair margin, you’ll likely have issues with rubbing fender liners and from what I’ve seen here and e90post, the 313 wheels are not durable so even with more sidewall, there’s a good chance you’ll still bend/crack wheels.

It’s your car and your money but I’d consider finding a set of 17” wheels with proper profile lightly used for similar money as a new set of tires.

Sounds fair to me, thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks.

I think I would look at the four digit build dates(week and year) on tire sidewall before purchasing new tires.

I know over here in DE, there is a law that says tires can't be very old to be considered "new" tires. I think a month or two old maximum. Every time I've bought tires.. they have been only a week or two old.

Tires older than five years old are worthless bc the rubber is no longer soft and pliable.

I've heard that TR sells old discontinued tires. I guess that's why they are cheap. You get what you pay for. Again I would highly recommend getting PS4 or PS4S tires.
