BMW N51 Turbo build

Hey guys writing up this post just to document this build for anyone who wants to try and follow this path I'm taking right now since their isn't much good info to go off of. But I have a 2012 BMW 128i N51 fbo it's on a custom tune from AA on E40 AA headers, secondary cat deletes, stage 3 intake manifold, drop in K&N filter with charcoal filter delete, 3inch exhaust no reasonstor with a virbant muffler. Since I've pretty much reached the limit with N/A power (I know there's still a couple other mods left just not worth the money to me) I've decided to boost the car I'm writing up this thread for anyone who wants try to replicate this kit in the future as I complete it me and my tuner from AA are trying to work out some things currently as we are designing this kit.
The turbo I am going with personally is a boost labs 5855 dual ball bearing turbo this is going to be a top mount kit I have a fabricator who usually does N54s making me a top mount manifold he should have these manifolds sold for our cars after the design is finished. I'm retrofitting a after market 135i after market intercooler. I'll continue to update the thread as the build pursues I intend to push 20psi on this turbo the max for these engines seems to 25psi where they will blow from seeing bpc N52 turbo car and another guy on YouTubes turbo car so around 650whp is where these internals need to be beefed up.
Currently this turbo build should come under $3000 unless some other things pop up.
If you guys have Instagram and need some questions answered you can reach me there directly @Issa_n5x

Just a friendly heads up. Your engine will grenade long before you even come close to 20psi.

2 builds have recorded where the engine has grenade itself lol it's about 25psi or 600whp when the internals fail.

650 would probably be 25psi and that's forsure to blow lol 20psi will be my max based on the other cars I researched findings after that I'm do forged rods and pistons possibly next year. My biggest hurdle right now is going to get passed 10psi I have the gm auto trans which I hear are like glass so plan on swapping it for a ZF Auto from the 335i later down the road.

You’ve been warned. Have at it and don’t forget to video the day you spin it up to 20psi, love to see that.
You’ll never even do it anyway, a lot of talk on this forum about turbo, super charging their 128/328 but usually they wise up and forget it. You’ll join them also I presume, if you do go through with it we’ll see who’s Lol.

And you’re going to do it all for under $3000. You do have a good imagination.

Lol ok bro I honestly don't really care for the negativity to be honest I'm trying to pursue something different is all and I have all my parts already on order and yes it comes out to around 3k. Tuning is the only issue since I don't live near the east coast where shops like stage fp is. I'll update this thread with all the parts when they arrive

Firstly, great project I hope you have fun with it! Lots and lots of fun. Please keep us updated and don't forget the pictures.

Next, reality! This is one of those "don't try it at home" sort of things. BMW has several turbocharged in-line six motors that are much better than a home built N52 turbo. You can even purchase a car with one of those motors Pre-installed. With brakes, transmissions and suspensions designed to manage the power.

I went with a guy who creates N54 and N55 manifolds you can find him on Instagram @jpworkz this is going to be the first N52 manifold he's created. If all goes well maybe sell it too for anyone who really wants to go the same route.

I know I'm perfectly aware lol I almost bought a B58. Probably will soon or straight to a S55. But in my current situation i don't know just want to do something different hopefully it works out if it doesn't oh well just hoping for the best.

*Update
Just got off the phone with Bob at Stage FP so remote tuning is definitely possible. So turbo build is going full steam ahead! He also said he's planning on building a turbo kit soon straight from them so if any of you guys are interested in a kit rather then piecing things together their should be a option soon!

Definitely following this thread. I've done a lot of work to my N51, but would love to have N54/N55 power without having to swap cars. Best of luck, hope this goes well!

Really takin the platform to its limits! I would say only crazier thing I've seen done to a 128 is a V8 swap. Good luck brutha!

Ooooh, something new being done on this platform! I think it's only been E90's that have been turbo'd with the N51/N52 up 'til now. I don't think anyone has done an N51 at all, so props on that. Can't wait to see the results!

A turbo kit would be incredible. I’d buy one the day it came out.

Thumbs up

Awesome, I am looking forward to seeing the results are you in OC or LA. I have often thought about doing this to my N51 but am leaning more towards running a wet 75 or 100 shot of nitrous instead. Both are risky as hell but you can get a used N51 for under 1k nowadays so I think it's worth it even if your engine grenades lol. My car is fun as hell in the twisties with the upgraded suspension but feels a tad bit slow in the straights, it just needs a little more power to do what I want.
