Exhaust corrosion

Car has 8,500kms. Never driven in rain, or anything other than sunny dry weather.

Check out the exhaust tips. Anyone know if a tip replacement will fix this issue? or will the whole exhaust have to be replaced?

The corrosion appears to be limited to the interior walls of the exhaust tips. I believe the tips are just chrome plated steel, so the unplated interior walls are probably susceptible to corrosion, although I've never heard anyone complain of it before. The tips just slide right off with a bit of force, so replacement is very easy. If it were me, I would remove the tips, remove the rust from the interior walls via sandblasting or pneumatic wire wheel, then paint the interior flat black and reinstall. No need to replace them for just a little surface corrosion.

Or drive the car more, so the oily black blowby will coat the inside of the tips and prevent rusting.

Mine had suffered the same fate but not as bad, and I'm in the UK.

The tips are just a push on affair and mine were replaced under warranty.

The exhaust was fine, just the poor quality tips that had suffered.

My tips were also replaced under warranty. The chrome plating was beginning to blister.

Just wondering - about your driving habits, because of the very low mileage on your car - around 300km/month = 10km/day: if you don't usually drive or commute more than 10-15km each session, the exhaust will never heat up enough to drive out the moisture from combustion, and it will condense in the exhaust system.
This could be the reason why the tips never dry out each day, and would corrode the steel.

I got tired of the cheap looking tips and solved the drone issue at the same time.

Thanks for the comments.

I had remembered that a member had changed his factory tips but forgot if the inner walls were part of the tips or the actual exhaust. If the dealer won't replace under warranty, then I'll take matters into my own hands.

Driving habits as follows:
6 - 7 months of the year = unable to drive due to salty roads

5 -6 months of the year = roads suitable to drive nice cars

divided by
*days of rain
*days of high winds
*days of commuting to the possibility of parking in a dangerous parking lot (work, stores, etc.)

minus
*areas of the city with nothing but potholes
*no road racing track within 3 days drive

equals
2.6 days per year of usage

Remember, if you have nice weather and a local track, enjoy your 1M. For some people, its a conversation piece in a house.

Or can anyone recommend a set of tips with what appears to be sound-absorbing resonator liners, as in Trond's picture? I'd like to reduce the resonance in the 2400-3000rpm range.

The tips are from an Italian maker Power Motive. I purchased a complete exhaust system with a bypass valve. Not sure whether it is possible to by the tips only.

I had the dreadful drone from around 2000-2400 rpms and which is now completely gone in both closed and silent mode at rpms mentioned. In open mode there is tendency of a drone at lower rpms and under load (around 1500 rpms). In silent mode no more drone at any rpm - only exhaust note which is similar as stock. I am very happy as the car is now more wife friendly...

Lol...I love the drone. Wouldn't want it much worse than it is now though. Im installing a Vorsteiner exhaust soon which comes with catless, non resonated mid pipes. I hope the drone wont be too bad...

This thread helped a lot in reducing the drone in my 1M.
Turned down the drone with a bit of dynamat in an easily-reached location under the trunk floor.

I also put Lloyd's Mats on the floor and in the trunk. Their Luxe mats are soft 1/2"-deep-nap carpet mats with 1/8" of rubber foam underneath. They fit perfectly, and soak up a lot of noise, as well as being barefoot-comfortable. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=759270
