Leaking reservoir

I was cleaning my car today and noticed some sticky residue around the top of this container. It looks as though it has leaked.

The manual does not mention anything about this reservoir so does anybody know what it contains?

That is the PS (power steering res). The screw cap has a little vent hole at the side. Over time it is normal for it to spray some fluid/oil out the side and all over the res. Over time dust and dirt gets all over the res. Nothing really to worry about.

I had one on my old Porsche 944 Turbo - that did that too. Just use a rag and wipe it clean from time to time. btw... built into the bottom of that ZF PS res is a filter. IF you ever have a PS failure you need to replace this res - since the filter is built into it. Been there done that on my old Porsche too. lol

Thanks for the help man, I was getting a bit worried.

Does that mean it has to be refilled every so often?

Cheers

YES. But... we are talking like every 30K or 60K miles.

It is "supposed" to be checked at every "free" service. But most techs simply skip it. Leave it dirty when you go in and see if it gets checked!
