Exclamation BMW means safety

For those who are trying to decide between BMW and another luxury sedan brand, please think about your safety. Seriously, I think this is something that has been utterly overlooked by most people, and should be looked at a lot more closely. All manufacturers claim their cars are safe, and all of them crash test them, but it is only when the worst happens and you experience things in real life that you can say you've made the right choice.

I've unfortunately had the chance to experience BMW's safety features recently, and can say that I will buy no lesser car. Nor should you, if you value your own life one bit. I do not want to go into details, because until the police report is closed, much of what I can say would be speculation. What I will do is show you this passage from the local paper:

Quote:
Ottawa Police are looking for witnesses to a fatal three-car collision on the Airport Parkway that claimed the life of one man and sent two others to hospital on Nov. 2.

Police said a Dodge was travelling southbound on the Airport Parkway, south of Hunt Club Rd., when it entered the northbound lane. A northbound taxi swerved to avoid the collision as did the Dodge, and the two vehicles collided in the northbound lane. The taxi was hit on the passenger side and the Dodge was knocked on its side. The Dodge was then hit by a northbound BMW. The male driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people were taken to Montfort Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Northbound BMW was a 2006 e90 330i Premium package, black on dakota grey leather with burl walnut trim. It had about 100km on the clock, and will never clock another. What the article aludes to is that this car saved my life, and the life of my salesman while I was test-driving it last Wednesday. This car struck the Dodge head-on: the BMW was travelling at about 70kph (40mph for the Yanks and Brits), and the Dodge at least the same. The 330 was unrecognizable from the firewall forward, but the passenger compartment was unharmed: the side windows were not even cracked. And, the most amazing part? My salesman and I walked out of the wreck with only minor muscle strain to our necks and shoulders and, in my case, a seriously sore chest. Basically, the car did its job.

The moral of this story is that the e90 is one of the safest cars you will ever see. If you are on the fence about what car to get, run -- don't walk -- back to your local BMW retailer. You owe it to yourself, because, as I can personally attest, a pefectly safe drive can become a fatal collision in less than a second, and with no warning whatsoever.

Drive safe.

Wow, Mr. Abulia....that is wild.....you must be spooked as anything...accidents are very not funny. Thank God you and your salesman are okay, and pity the poor guy's family who had to get that phone call...

Still shaking my head...

Now I know why you want to get one for your Dad.

What a scary thing. I'm glad to hear that you are ok.

About the safety thing, I just watched the BMW Owner's Experience DVD last night, and one specific part of that DVD was all about the incredible amounts safety devices and precautions incorporated into every BMW. I was really amazed. I really want to find a way to rip specific clips from that DVD and share it with our members here. You comments truly echo everything I heard and saw on that DVD.

Here's a thread from another forum with images. M3 with 5 passengers sitting at a red light gets hit from behind by a drunk driver in an F150 at 60 MPH. Everyone walks away...

60MPH! That is simply AMAZING!

You know, one amazing thing is that from all crashes pics I've seen involving BMWs, there's one thing in common: no matter how severe the crash is, the passenger compartments most the time retain 100% of its original shape. THAT is what I recon saved the most lives. Good job BMW!

You and the sales guy are very fortunate to have come out of the accident so unscathed. I trust that over the next weeks and months your injuries do not escalate. Unfortunately lots of injuries come out at a later time, especially muscular ones.

So it was fortunate that you were in the e90 at the time as its safety features really did save your lives.

Wow. Good post. I knew BMW made good cars before I got my E90 -

In South Africa, we have these taxi's. They are kind of like mini-busses and are supposed to hold 15 poeple or so. The drivers (to make money) shove 18-20 poeple in these vans and then drive like maniacs. A taxi was stopped on the left hand side of the road (we drive on the left) and my friend was driving in the right lane (on a dual carrigeway). The taxi decided it wanted to make a right turn, and immediately pulled out right infront of my friend. My friend drove straight through the taxi - splitting the taxi in half - and then his car turned upside down and slid over to the traffic light and smashed into that. He got out of the car, although very shaken, with only a small scratch on his elbow. He went to a party that night - and was 100% fine.

The car on the other hand was a total write off. It looked like shit, but not half as bad as the taxi which was now two peices, and the taxi driver who was dead.

What car was he driving that saved him in such a high speed, dangerous crash. Not a BMW - but a BMW made Mini Cooper. Now, if a small "BMW" can protect you like that - I'm sure a bigger one can protect you the same, if not better!!!

Hektic story you have....
1. You are very lucky, No major injuries...specially seeing as it was quite a high speed crash (most car crash tests are done at 64kph onto a still barrier - making it about 40 per car) and yours was 70 per car (making it closer to 120kph). The BMW protected you very well...

2. It wasn't your car. I hope the dealer doesn't hit you with some massive deductable to pay though, but it wasn't your fault so you should be fine...

Glad you're okay... :P

Thank goodness for your safety!!! Simply an amazing story.

Were you test-driving the car in the process of buying the touring version for your dad?
