Can't get my 16 gB flash drive recognized

This is more of a computer than a car question. I plug in my flash drive and then go to USB and the radio says to insert USB, it doen't realize the flash drive is there. I tried a different flash drive as a tester with only one song on it and it worked.
In windows media player it knows I have a flash drive, but when I look up by artist it says that no files are found. I loaded lots of music on this by burning CD's using windows media player (at the highest bit rate allowed) and then drag and dropping from the My Music directory to the flash drive. It is organized in folders the same way it was burned, by artist, album, and song.
I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

I will try myself. I am sure someone said they got 32 gig working. Plus make sure you format your memory to fat32 or fat16 and not NTFS. I will buy some memory next week if nobody else has proven this.

If you do find out it is NTFS, you will have no choice but to format it to FAT. Unfortunately, modern Windows systems don't support formatting in FAT anymore. (although reading/writing to it of course is fine) You will need to find third-party software to reformat your drive to FAT (either 16 or 32). I recommend: Powerquest PartionMagic.

USB 2.0? What format are the files (.wav, .mp3)? What brand?

I have a 16g OCZ that works fine.

Thanks for all the ideas. It must be a bad flash drive, evern though I can use My Computer to scroll through the folders and double click the songs and they play on Windows Media Player. It is USB 2.0, FAT32, .mp3, K Data. I tried loading a few songs on an old 64 MB flash (very few) and it worked fine. I have another empty 16 GB K Data drive waiting for jazz and classical but I may trade it for another brand before I try it.

What??? Mine doesn't Neither does my work computer. (Both of which are XP Pro SP2)

Edit: Oh I just remembered that XP can format FAT, but only on drives up to 32GB. I was trying to format an 80GB the other day so thats why it would not let me select FAT. That's why we were seeing that discrepancy.

I don't have 32 gig memory chip but all should be the same (well wait we are talking Microsoft so....)

I select a HD to format, only NTFS.
I select SD (secure digital) memory to format and I get;

NTFS
FAT (Default)
FAT32
exFAT (divorced FAT??? lol, no aka FAT64 see hyperlink)

Note: Using Windows Vista Ultimate (M$ sucks, can't wait for an Apple...maybe later this year)

Memory over 4 GB called (SDHC) requires a special reader/writer. Do not use old one's. SanDisk memory purchased at Costco, comes with a SDHC reader/writer in the package (black little thingy with a clear plastic cap, and says so on the package). Use it with no problems.

When I do buy more SDHC, I will format with all the differnt choices and try it out and post. It might be a few more weeks though, as I have 2 Classic Ipods.

I was reading about the new iDrive coming to the 1 for 2009 and it has a HD and allows you to store audio from even CD's, sweet!

One of the best mods on gaming machines and other things like HD mp3 players is putting in a bigger HD. It would be nice to do that MOD.

Anyway off topic here, but I wanted to clairify while I am on hold for the new iPhone with Rogers here in Ontario Canada.

After a replacement from Newegg I still couln't get my 16 gb A Data flash to work. So I ordered an OCZ and it works fine. According to posts at E90.com some brands work and some don't. So if yours does not work, try another.

I have a 8gb stick and it scrolls pretty slowly. I remember someone saying they use 1gb sticks and navigation is much faster:iono:

Most all flash drives made by SanDisk work well, I like the Micro-Cruzer model(retractable).
