Xenons

So I know this has been bantered around here a bit but I just can't figure one thing out. Vehicles, imo, look so much better with Xenons. I read here lately that the reason why BMW doesn't put Xenons in the centre two lights is because of the DRL function (which most of the world requires except the US) and that flashing cars in Europe necessitates a bulb that can cycle rapidly without burning out prematurely....why then does the Touareg, Crossfire and many others do double Xenon's?

Weird...but wish my car had double Xenons...

bi-xenons are more expensive. bi-xenons share the same hid bulb for the high and low beams. For the low beams, a shield is in place to prevent glare, when you activate the hi-beams, the shield moves away and you see the full beam pattern.

Would bi-xenons with the halogen centre still be more than a Touareg set up with double Xenons?

What advantage is it to have centre halogens though?? I mean the Touareg is still sold in Europe...

Where does it say on VW's website that Touareg has double xenons? It is still the same bi-xenon as BMW.

Just like an Audi A4 (2004 model) has a halogen bulb, that looks like a xenon bulb. Not nearly as bright though....VW and all their tricks...

True, but for the 2005 models they changed to ordinary reflectors. Unfortunately, the light-output became worse than with the projector lenses.

Yep. It has 2 projector lenses on each side, one for high/low beams; the other for fog lights. Only the former has xenon bulbs (in a bi-xenon housing), whereas the latter has regular halogens. I can't imagine European standards allowing dual xenons in any vehicles. That would just totally blind oncoming traffic. And for what? So that the driver can see 10 km down the road instead of 5?

No...what I am saying is that a manufacturer, in theory, could make one projector for low and one for high rather than bi-xenon. Right now our cars use xenon for low beam...it is just one projector that has a shutter.

Whats wrong with the current bi-xenon system ?

And how would you flash your lights with your system ???

Nothing is "wrong" with current set up except for cosmetics. I like the idea of daytime and flashing Xenons....if low beams can be Xenons, then there shouldn't be an issue with totally elimating the halogen (imo). I would bet that in a year or two we won't see halogen at all on the E90....wait and watch.

You cannot flash a Xenon lamp at the moment

The day you can they will get rid of the halogen

BMW has done the lok alike double xenon thing too. I am currently reading "BMW Cars" by Martin Buckley. On page 151, there is a picture of a Z8 with both lights on and they are the same style but obviously different colors.

You are confusing the double xenon with double projector lens.
A projector lens does not necessarily mean xenon, and vice versa.

It's really amazing they they've been able to engineer a shutter within the actual bulb.

No, the shutter is between the bulb and the projector lens, not within the actual bulb itself.

From: http://www.bmw.com/generic/com_04/en...eadlights.html

"Also known as bi-xenon lights, this feature means that both the dipped and full beams are based on xenon technology. The xenon full beam uses the existing light source of the xenon dipped beam, whose intense bluish light is created by a light arc rather than the usual incandescent coil.

The full beam is activated in the usual way, using a control stalk. This folds away a screen located in the path of the beam that is generated by the ellipsoid-technology xenon headlight. Overall, this results in an even better visibility range and improved roadside illumination.
At the same time, the bi-xenon headlight system using ionised noble gas consumes less energy than conventional halogen headlights and has a much longer service life."
