Road Trip..

Hey All,
I have a question. Ive had my E90 for a month, and i have about 600 miles on my car. Im leaving in less than 2 weeks for Vegas (5 hr trip, 330 miles each way). Anyway, is there anything i should do/need for my car to make sure that i have a safe trip. Or is it completly fine cause its still new? Anyway, if you have any opinions/suggestions, that'd be great!

hey bella... well it seems to me the 325i will handle just fine.. just practice safe driving~ i.e beware of debree on the road.. thats the only thing that worries me.. with my wheel upgrade with non run-flats.. and no spare.. but besides that make sure you have proper tire pressures (account for the heat) other than that you should be good to go~ beware of bird poop~ take some windex and micro fiber cloth to wipe it off immediately~ don't let it bake~ ^^ rain-x sounds good too.. but not really sure about rain in the desert.. hehe.. hope this helps.. oh~ dont forget to fill up before you leave and you should have no problems reaching vegas on one tank~ hate to pull in to a gas station middle of the desert.. too many movie crimes/murders got me paranoid...

Shouldn't be any problem, but try to vary the engine RPM as much as possible. If you have an Auto, this can be hard to do, but during the first 1200 miles, you should avoid driving at the same RPM for more than 5 minutes or so. This is hard to do on the highway for 4 to 5 hours, but it can be done. I may be extra anal about it, but you only get one chance to break it in, so my thoughts are you should do your best to do it right. If there is traffic on the I-15, then the stop and go nature of the drive is perfect for break-in.

It was a pain with my car because I drive 90 miles to work each way, and for the first month or so I was always shifting between 4th, 5th and 6th all the way to work to keep the tach moving. Maybe use manual mode and shift between 4th-6th every few minutes...

Probably if you just vary your speed as much as possible and keep it under 4500 RPM you will be fine. No full throttle runs to 130 mph out in the desert....

You've had it for a month and still only have 600 miles?!!! Don't you LIKE driving your car?!!! You better move farther from the restaurant, you'll need an oil change on the calendar before you finish break-in.

What is the typical distance per tank people are getting? Looks like the typical range of the vehicle is in the 400-450 mile range on the highway. Can anybody confirm?

My work is 4 miles away, my school is 4 miles away, my boyfriend's house is 1.5 miles away, the mall is 3.5 miles away, the beach is 8 miles away, my friends live within 10 miles of me.. I really dont drive far. San diego is like a small city, everything is close by.

Yay San Diego.....it's really a cool place to live and everything is close by....WE LOVE SAN DIEGO.

Now.....be careful on the 15 to and from Vegas. Don't speed too much and beware of drunk drivers....I've heard that this stretch of the 15 can be hazardous because of all the partying that goes on in Vegas.

HAVE FUN!!!!
PS...Great meatballs at your restaurant.....YUMMY.
PSPS...I get my car back in a few days....hopefully.

Hey Marcus!
Im glad you enjoyed our food! I hope you come back and try some of the other great pasta dishes.. I eat it 4x a week and i still crave it!
Thanks for the tip. The I-15 is crazy. But im planning to leave here around 6am, that way i can pass the desert before it gets amazingly hot (noon-3pm). Ha but no matter what time it is, that death valley area is just hell on earth . Hope my baby does well out in that heat!

CC330i is right, be sure to vary the RPM if possible.
Also, I would double check the tire pressure before leaving.
Have Fun, I'll be in Vegas on the 18th.

Hey Bellas,

It looks like you got all the info you need from the other members already. By the way, I'm in Las Vegas, let me know if you'd like to get together while you ar ehere so we can show off our E90s to each other. The only other thing I can think of is as you know it is hot around here this time of year. The drive on I-15, especially between Barstow and Primm Nevada will be a good test of the cars Hot Weather abilities. Bring some water just to be safe, maybe in a gallon jug. Make sure your tire pressure is right before the trip and doo all the other necessary things that people due to prepare their cars for a road trip. Of course, if you have I-Drive, you will have fun watching yourself cruise up the 15!

Have a good trip!

So what should the correct tire pressure be? Ill bring some water, and the heat shouldnt affect too much right? No tires melting off haha...

If you're lucky....you'll hit some thunderstorms with major FLASHFLOOD along the 15 to Vegas.....to cool down the tires.

Just make sure you have enough gas and avoid the hitchhikers.

I do that trip often enough (about 8 times a year) on that road, and did that trip about 2 months ago. On top of the suggestions above, I will add to be extra careful on couple of the bridges under construction. At these joints, the road is very uneven, and drops like 1-2 inches, and goes back up again. Think they were about 40 miles after Barstow (coming from SD). Got a friend who went through that on a C-class and tore his mud-flaps, which ended up scraping his tire. If you are driving in day light, you will see the gaps on the road pretty early.

Other than that, have a great time.

Open the driver's door and look for the decal that lists info including tire pressures for the front and rear.
