IOW, if these were the old ones and BMW switched to what we have now, would everyone want to upgrade?

I have to admit, I didn't like them at first, but they have grown on me.

When I got my first E46 in 1999, the 323i came with the black "slats" in the kidney grill and the 328i came with chrome "slats". So everyone "upgraded" to 328i chrome slats.

10 years later the chrome slats are standard and everyone "upgrades" to the BMW Performance all black kidneys.....
yeah thats a good point...although I do love how aggressive these look compared to the pre-2012 tail lights, and would not trade these for the older ones ever

I am confused. I have a 2012 128 with halogen lights. Does that mean I do not have the LCI lights? Are the lights lit up with a LCD vs a traditional bulb. Thanks...GR

You and I have the same set up. You have the LCI lights, but they are light with conventional bulbs. I'm doing an experiment to see if we can retrofit the LED based tails.

Nothing else?

Did you guys install this yourself? Or did you guys got professional help?

I LOVEEEEEEEE these lights and I always thought these weren't plug and play @@ (I asked the salesperson if they are willing to swap the tailights from my '11 ones to these ones instead of the cash incentives for my 135i and he said no lol)

That is exactly everything that you need and they are SUPER easy to replace. I did mine in about 20 mins. The hardest part is pulling back the carpets, after that I think it's like 3 bolts and 2 electric connectors...so easy and looks so good.

Damn thread talked me into it. Just installed mine.

I pulled the pin on both sides to pull back the carpeting to get more room to work. When putting back together I had to pull another pin and loosen the phillips screw of the black plastic trim at the front of the trunk so I could push the carpeting back underneath so the side laid flat.

Also noticed the side/upper connector was reversed on one of my LCI tails compared to the other side, and the stock lights. I already had the light in and didn't bother pulling to investigate, so I just flipped the connector.

Worst of all, I didn't even like these at first, but now I love them. I will admit they don't look that different unlit in the daylight, but definitely do in the dark when lit up.

Just like how everyone said, installation was easyyyyy breeezy... Took less than 1/2 hr for installation..

I'm really glad the OP created this thread, or else I wouldn't have known that this was just a easy plug & play install

And here are some pics..

Don't know about you guys , but i iniitally liked the LCI but when i compared side by side I decided that i like the old tailights better - looks more 'BMW" whereas nowadays there are a lot of other car brand ( Audi, VW ect... Hyundai ) with this style.

You may be in the wrong thread if you don't like these. Pretty sure most of us all like our LCIs.

I didn't have an actual pic of these handy when I made the special so I used the image from the parts diagram in our BMW catalog...it's not in color.

If you click into that special on our site, then the 'Additional Images' tab - we have a couple other color pics of those..
