Crazy for wanting to trade the 1M for the M3???

I believe the average driver would prefer the more refined, easier to drive, better sounding (to my ears), more prestigious (to non car people) M3. So I don't think you're nuts for wanting to trade it, and it may well be the better car for what you're after.

I wouldn't make the same trade, so I voted that way, but if that's what you prefer then by all means...

I sold my 2008 6MT stripped E92 M3 for the 1M.

I have zero regrets. The M3 engine is boring in its perfection. The car simply wasn't fun. I also bought back my E46 M3 because it was fun. The 1M is even fun at 5 mph.

A 1M and a E46 M3 is a perfect combo!

You are going to get very skewed results here. They are both very good cars. I have driven an e90 6mt and an e92 dct comp and I was blown away by the dct. After I test drove the e92 I was almost certain I would get an M3, all the 1Ms were spoken for at this point. I was hunting for an e90 m while keeping a presence here for a 1M. Just so happened I found a local one pretty much how I would have ordered it. The 1M is better for me for a few different reasons.

I don't need extra space, I rarely have passengers. I am a younger, single male. I debated an e90 M3 and that would have provided ample space that I don't really need. But I never really like the e92 so never considered it.

It is a rare, quirky car that I get a lot of compliments for. People have never seen it, it looks kinda crazy. IMO due to its rarity it will hold its value better than an M3 which is a perk if/when I decide to sell (hope to not have to ever sell it).

I really enjoy the low-end torque. I like having throttle response under 2k rpms, which you don't get with the M3. M3 though you get the high end power which is awesome too. Two different sensations that to me are equally fun. I am sad BMW is going away from NA, it truly is a shame. That said torque is much more usable in my driving scenarios.

The 1M is a good deal lighter than the M3. Makes it more tossable and fun IMO. M3 has gotten too large and chunky around the edges.

I have yet to do any modifications, and probably won't do anything major. But when I decide to its nice to know that extra hp is very very easy and cheap to get. I will likely address other areas first as I feel the 1M is fast enough in stock form, we will see how long this mind-set lasts.

I don't think one is better than the other. The engines are wildly different and both are strong in their own right. It really is which one speaks to you more and you feel better about. I chose the 1M and haven't looked back, I love it that much.

Apples and oranges. I yearn for the days when BMW takes lightweight construction relatively seriously again (i.e. E30, etc). I'm very content with my 1M, but that's because it fulfilled my criteria. The 3 is a fantastic vehicle as well, but just different.

Went from a E92 M3 to 1M, no regrets what so ever, 1M is just sheer driving fun.

The M3 has legacy, yes, but its like an overweight baby, too big, too heavy, brilliant engine though, but you can`t rev anywhere 8K RPM, so it has limited usability. Boring in its linearity, yes, that is really spot on !

Let`s face it, IRL the 1M is the car to beat, agile, fast, brutal stance, fantastic steering/accelerating/breaking.......what could you possible want more?

The only thing I could wish for; BMW, please produce a 1M likewise successor in the 2M /M2

If I do feel like revving I`ll take the S1000RR for a ride

I cant speak for the 1M crowd, but like you I have always wanted an M3. I have driven a supercharged e46 and an '09 M3 and love both cars. Life is short, so get what you want so you'll not have any regrets. I just have to wait for my daughter to graduate

The only M3 I would switch my 1M for is the F80.

I love the way the current M3 looks and it has a nicer interior.

I'd hold out for the 2014 m3 if I were considering the switch. Of course, it doesn't satisfy your NA preference, but it will likely be one hell of a car. It may be the perfect compromise for you: a weight in between the m3 and 1m, increased cargo space, and performance that will sadly tip the scales of whether the m3 really outperforms the 1m. I may even be tempted when it comes out. Thank god I'll be making more money by then.
