waterpump

I just read something that stated the waterpump is a "on demand" unit
rather than continuous driven. Is that correct?

Thanks All

It's an electric water pump. Not belt driven.

I used Torque to create virtual gauges on a tablet. One was for water temperature. What I learned is my car runs hotter at a steady cruise than it does if I am accelerating. The software makes it run hotter so it will get slightly better gas mileage. When you accelerate hard, it runs the cooling system more so the engine doesn't get too hot. Kind of makes sense. Until you also realize that running hot takes usable life out of a lot of things on the engine. I think they don't put a temperature gauge on the car because they don' want people thinking something is wrong then they are running hot at a steady 60 mph cruise.

And also cause that gauge would be dancing around like a madman.

Oil temp is nice to have (fitted a 135i cluster) and it stays rock solid at about 210F when doddling around town and cruising on the highway. Haven't passed 240F on the track, even with 85F, high humidity weather.

So when it goes like everyone says it will, does the CEL up before damage is done? How do you know? Just see it overheat?

You'll get an engine temperature warning, at which point you need to pull over and shut it down immediately (overheating can warp the cylinder head). You can then slowly limp it home 5 minutes of running, 10 minutes of cooling at a time...

Never experienced this myself, but that's what I've heard about it failing.

Mine crapped out on the coldest day of the year only a mile from my house after a fairly long trip so I was VERY lucky.

Basically I got a warning light (yellow) and my fan was running full tilt and car went into limp mode.

I crawled home the mile or so and I was lucky it was about 9 degrees that day.

You don't need a water temperature gauge. The oil temp will be about 15->20 degrees hotter than water; however, the oil reaches it max temp later than coolant. It also gives a better picture of the engine's operating environment. You don't want to operate the engine at full load until the oil is up to operating temperature.

Also note that the oil cooler use the engine's coolant to remove excess heat from the oil.

This is incorrect for a 135i. The oil cooler is a air-to-liquid heat exchanger mounted in the passenger side wheel well. Some 128's have an oil cooler that uses engine coolant that is mounted where the oil filter housing is, but not the 135i as far as I know.

I played Russian Roulette and probably drove my car for about 40 miles after the warning came on. Fan was going off like crazy when the engine got hot. I had a p3 cars so when I saw it hit 220 I just pulled over. The sucky part since I knew I was going to limp it home then to the mechanic was the cooling time. I waited about 20 to 30 minutes to cool but it feels like forever when you spend your time just sitting there. Just replaced it 2 months ago and bought a new car 2 weeks ago. What a waste
