Looking forward, sure. But both M Coupes and the E36 M3 has better steering feel. I'm in my 40's, which might explain why I feel the best M Car should at least have individual throttle bodies and an 8k+ redline. Either S54 M Coupe for me.

If that 1M has the V8, id sell my kidney and get one right away.

I am certain that BMW M even had an internal discussion about engines, and i feel that they did not want it to outperform the M3 (at the time) by too much.

IMO The greatest M car must be a 4 seat coupe or a 4 door sedan. The whole point of an M car is to be as great and practical as can be. I love the Z coupes as much as anyone but to me the 1M hits the absolute sweet spot. I don't think either Z M coupe is all around enough to take home that prize.

The 1M has the madness and uniqueness of the 2002 Turbo, the dimensions closer to an E30 M3, and the suspension geometry of a modern M car.

M cars are about balance and handling.
Balance, handling AND engines.

Ever since the mid to late 70s when the M5 came out, BMW M always dedicated an engine to their M cars.

So from the 70s till 2010, that is 40 years of having specific M engines.

As Chris Harris said, this was a "Skunk works project", they did not have the time, the N54 is known for its over engineered robust internals and it was mass produced, i could see why they would "quickly" tune it and use it instead of the V8 M3 (that an some internal politics).

But saying that M cars are ONLY about balance and handling is so incorrect, the engine is such a big deal for M cars.

Otherwise M would have used "standard" engines with a small tune and call it a day. It is like saying an AMG car with a standard Mercedes engine...it does not work.

Yes the WHOLE PACKAGE of the 1M works very well, so well that it is regarded one of the best, because M tinkered with that N54 just enough to make it so. But to say "Handling and balance" and disregarding the engine....that is not true.

Read my reply above, he is partially right, but you are both looking at it from one perspective, the ENGINE alone.

The 1M is a very special case that will most likely never happen again, it is in my eyes a proper M car indeed, but focusing on "handling and balance" or just "the engine" alone is not enough, as i said above as a PACKAGE it worked out to be an amazing product.

Throwing a tinkered N54 into the 1M to get it produced quickly is PART of the story. Did you know that BMW execs had rejected the 1M proposal several times and they kept building it? The story is more M than most M cars.

Porsche copied the recipe exactly for the GT4 and it worked again. Carrera S engine thrown into a skunked up Cayman.

Yes, and your point being?

It is a standard BMW N54 engine with tinkered M software (and some small bits), end result being one hell of a fantastic M car.

BMW exces are always stubborn and want to save money to make more, they doubted they would sell 3,000 E30 M3s at the time and they ended up selling more than they could ever dreamed of.

What I'm saying is that the N54 is part of the story...Nothing more, nothing less. If it had been given a bespoke M engine it would not exist. There's no way it would have been greenlit and there's no way it would have been $47k new. I think the engine choice in the 1M should be accepted as part of the story instead of being argued about...

Why? It is 1 of 450 in the U.K. where the video was made...

If we're going by the tradition definition of what a M car is, I think the 1M is up there. M cars has always been primarily about chassis - everything else was a bonus. From what was written in reviews and what was shown in videos, 1M had that in spades.

Agree. IMO the E39 M5 was the best M car because as long as it was driven (short tripping would cause drivability issues) it wasn't a maintenance* nightmare.

Right but then they say the same stuff about the M2 (1M owners as well). I was 100% guilty of that as well until I drove the M2. M has a way of getting that magic in there. Hard to explain but it feels special.

Never got the chance to drive a 1M though. They've become nearly unobtainium.
