Good chance your water pump has failed. Get it scanned soon and try not to drive it till you know for sure.

underneath the red coolant symbol it shows a date of 2017. does this mean it is an old code not deleted by the dealer before i bought it?

I had that symbol but not in red recently, occasionally, and when I checked the level the overflow looked dry. I did not have BMW coolant on hand so I dumped in a little distilled water. I have the anti freeze now so I will add some of that and then mix up a couple gallons of 50/50.

Sounds like you need to do the same or visit the dealer and get them to put some in.

I still have the original coolant pump and see no signs of an issue. So I am not 100% sure about this but I don't think you will get a low coolant symbol for a water pump failure. Seems like the car goes into limp mode, from what others have said. But I guess if it leaked it could be the reason it is low.

But regardless, if it is warm enough and it is inconvenient to visit the dealer, put a little distilled water into the overflow, assuming it is dry. It's not good to let it be dry, you can suck in air, create a bubble, and reduce cooling.

If you bought it recently, take it back and have them pull the code. It should be under some kind of warranty if you only bought it last year.

Warnings with dates mean service required.

I'm reading this as coolant had to be replaced by that date.

Either it was and no one reset the service-info, or you badly need the coolant replaced (and then you reset the service indicator)

after reading through the owners manual i actually think its for brake fluid change. i figured if the car was low on coolant it would of thrown a code or ses light.

That is brake fluid.

Is your handbrake on, or is that light on as well?

hand brake was on. i got an oil change done at a local place cause they had a 25 percent off sale. which put the cost of the oil change at the same as diy. so i said eff it and got them to do it to save me some time. then the tech came back and was like you have a low coolant warning. and this is how we got here lol. id imagine if i were actually low on coolant that the car would scream at me all the time. so slight panic attack, then all was good in the world. the first poster went straight to water pump. and i was all like its only got 35000 on it. this is my second BMW so im accustomed to freak outs.

RTFM! LOL.
The warnings for service required come up orange in advance of the expected service date. If you go past the service date the warning turns red.
Once it turns red you have to have the dealer or someone with access to the OBD reset it.
