If you have an manual, it's gets very expensive. Automatic guys have it easier, just need the Quaife only and not the complete Quaife Final Drive Unit.

It's really BMW's fault that an LSD upgrade costs $3600.
Midway through the production of the 335i final drive units, BMW decided to cut some costs and weld the ring gear to the diff in lieu of bolting the ring gear to the diff. Our 135i's use the same final drive as the 335's. Some of the early model 335i's out there can just swap their open diff for a Quaife @ $1695 + labor. For us 135's, we all have the later welded diff units. So you have to buy the Quaife + a complete differential unit = $3595. We priced out what it would cost us to do a custom lockup clutch type LSD. Ready for this one? (see below) $8500!! PLUS labor!!! So the Quaife didn't seem so bad afterall. But if you're coming from the Ford camp, $3600 for a diff does seem astronomical. |

This car is turning out to be less and less the "ultimate driving machine" The UDM would have something as basic as a LSD...standard.
300hp w/o a limited slip...that's just stupid. While they're at it, why not offer a 3 speed manual, one that shifts on the column! That way they could save the 6-speeds for their precious M cars. It seems the marketing people at BMW have more say than the engineers, which is a shame for a car like this.

BMW could have added the LSD, but that will raise the price of the vehicle by at least $2K and will bring the 135i closer to the performace of the M3, not something BMW wants to do.

Great assessment of why our beloved 1ers don't have LSD. This is the first car I've owned without LSD, and I am missing it!

To get back on topic, if BMW made an LSD part that wouldn't potentially void my warranty, I would hop on it right now! In fact, in order of what I want to do with my car (fictional within limits (no flying car) or realistic): 1. LSD 2. Shorter shift throw 3. Suspension 4. Lose some weight

This just in from my installer:
I have a Steptronic, so I have a bolted-on ring gear. However, the bolts are stretch bolts, and they are typically osed only once. They are burning up the phone lines trying to find the proper bolts. BMW doesn't even list them in their parts system. Hmmmm. . . I am anxiously waiting to hear from them. Has anyone run across this issue? Have Fun, Rick
