Rear wheels rubbing on fenders over bumps (stock suspension)

I recently noticed a loud rubbing/scraping sound coming from the back of my car when I drive through some big dips in the road. These aren't potholes or rough bumps. Just uneven pavement that works the suspension a bit. For example, driving slightly downhill pretty quickly and the road dips back up. When the car gets to the bottom of the dip, the shocks rebound or whatever you call it when they compress.

Anyways, I only have 5k miles on my car with stock suspension and 18" breytons. They do stick out closer to the fenders than the stock wheels did and I realized that the tires were hitting and rubbing against the rear fenders. I think one of these days it will start to damage my rear bumper. Does this sound normal? Think there's something wrong with my suspension? I was planning on getting an aftermarket suspension setup, but now I'm worried that a half inch lower will only make this issue worse.

Again, this is not from hitting potholes. These are just dips in the road.

those breytons dont poke out enough to rub on the fender i dont think..
what tire size are you running
if your hauling ass at a dip and your suspension compresses fully could be hitting the plastic lining inside th fender well

Could be. But I noticed a lot of black dust all round the fender well. I guess that's just brake dust?

feel if the fender lining is getting roughed up. it's probably rubbing though. how much load do you have in your car when it rubs?

This doesn't sound promising. I'm about to put that exact set-up on my dinan lowered car tonight...

The first time it happened I had a bunch of groceries in the trunk and back seat area with 1 passenger. The second time it happened, I had furniture from ikea with 1 passenger. Third time it happened it was empty with just me driving. I weigh about 170lb. The roads are very uneven where I live, so it might be just because of that. The only reason I worry is my driving habits haven't changed and this just started happening recently.

I'm planning on getting the dinan stage 3 as well so I'm interested in hearing your experience with that setup.

I will go for a drive with the new setup on Saturday morning and report back. I am running the Breytons with Dunlop Z1's 225/40 and 255/35. Gill advised that there was a chance these tires would rub. Mikeo is running 245/40 rears and they rub. Templedogg is running the 255/35 on the stock wheels, with H&R springs and is fine. The problem is that the Breytons' offsets put the wheel about 1/4 inch closer to the outside fender, which may be the source of rubbing.

I guess there is only one way to find out. Not sure what I'll do if it does rub...

i doubt those are rubbing on the actual fender, arent they only something like 8.5 with a +48 offset?

im running 9.5 with a +45 offset which sticks out much more, with the same size tires as you. that did rub on the fender. go look and see if theres tire marks on the actual fender or just on the lining. if it does hit the actual fender, you need to have your fenders rolled. i had' mine shaved and the lining trimmed.

Wow.
Those wheels are TOO wide for those tires.
The tires "protection lip" doesn't even come close to trying to protect the wheel rim edge.
And, the wheels stick out too far. Looks like the wrong wheel for this car.

i dont remember asking for your opinion ? 255 on a 9.5 is not very stretched at all. and i dont need "lip protection". you want to see wheels too wide for tires go to tyrestretch.com and have fun. pfft wrong wheel ? interesting
its called "flush" maybe this is a new term for you. looks like its still inside the fender to me. lol and i best part this is all coming from a guy that doesn't even have his car yet

Who pissed in your cornflakes?

Stretched? Who made any comment about being stretched?
Do you even know what you're responding to?

I wasn't commenting on your tire compared to your wheel, so check your attitude.

NO, I don't want to see wheels too wide for the tires. The wheel lip in that pict looks like it's wider than the tire. That's all I commented on.
There were NO negative connotations or derogatory comments towards you or your wheel/tire choice made by me.
Would it help you if I were to have said, "It LOOKS like....." ?
Because, all I had to go on was that pict, and in THAT pict it does look like what I said.

What in the world does not having my 135i YET, have to do with anything? Yeah, that's the BEST part, ain't it?!

I put on the Dunlops last weekend and haven't experienced any rubbing (yet.?), even with the Dinan suspension.

Hey.. so after rolling the fender does your setup still rub? I have a simliar offset on my wheels and they rub a bit but only on 1 side even when I am on stocks.. debating if I should roll the fender or not..

Any one can give pros and cons...?

Good to know. I couldn't pass up on the BMW Performance suspension deal going on by Dan at United BMW so no Dinan for me. I hope it works out as well.

Please provide an update. How's the rubbing with the new suspension? Has it gotten worse with the Star Specs?

Suspension is being installed today and tomorrow. I'll give an update after I've had some driving time.
