Over the past few weeks I've been collecting parts to address my paint correction needs. I haven't given the paint much love since taking ownership earlier this year, and judging by the infinite amount of swirls, the previous owners haven't either. In direct sunlight, it nearly makes me cringe.

After mulling over how to approach correcting the paint, it came down to paying a professional or staying true to myself and just learning how to do it myself. A few weeks of research here and there, a few hours lost to Youtube tutorials, and some time on Amazon, and here's what I came up with for my Jet Black paint:

BMW touch up paint, small brushes, and IPA to correct some paint chips I have around the car.

Meguiar's D300 on a Griot's Garage fast cutting microfiber pad, followed by Meguiar's 205 on a Griot's Garage orange correcting pad, and finished off with Blackfire Wet Diamond on a Griot's Garage red waxing pad.

and a Griot's Garage 6 inch random orbital to do the grunt work:

I've also picked up some other miscellaneous items to assist along the way like clay, quick detailer, leather cleaner, plenty of microfiber towels, a pad brush, pad conditioner, and some Jet Black touchup paint that I'll be applying a week or so prior to undertaking the full detail.

If my research serves me well, I should probably set aside an entire weekend, morning until night, split over at least two days.

I suggest you grab something to seal it all up after you're done. Hell if you can get your hands on that C.Quartz or whatever coating that'd be awesome. I had my car opti-coated and clean up maintenance is so easy

From what I can tell, the Blackfire is a sealant and according to them, protects up to 6 months. At that point, it'll be time for a thorough cleaning again before summer and I'll apply another coat. Looking forward to easy maintenance after the initial long time investment of compounding, polishing, and sealing.

Six months this, 12 months that... Meh. I get three four months max out of my sealant during winter. And it says 12 months on the can. The durability depends on many things.

The real move is to get the paint as perfect as possible, then "lock it in" with layers of protection that are added regularly.

Good luck with the restoration. It really needs it, lol.

It needs it bad. And I figured so as far as the 6-12 months time frame. 3-4 months sounds more realistic. Still, as you said, once I get the paint corrected properly, hopefully sealing will only be a task I'll be doing 3-4 times a year.

A small follow up on the RB External PCV system that I have installed:

It's been about 3,500 miles and a full month since I last checked my Mishimoto OCC connected to the RB External PCV system. Even though I thought I could easily make it the full 5,000 miles between oil changes before emptying my catch can (the first week of driving that I had the can installed, I only collected about 10% of the total capacity), I decided to play it safe. After my commute to work, I fully let the car cool down, and then pulled off the Mishimoto OCC to check what the system had prevented from going into my intake tract.

Whoa! Nearly completely full. The lower temperatures and mounting spot away from a heat source probably accounts for the weird consistency and coloring. The bottom portion of the can was a snotty, gunky mess. I ended up spraying the Mishimoto can out with degreaser and gave it a quick cleaning -- looks brand new again.

It looks like I should probably start checking every 2,000 miles or so from here one out just to be safe. Absolutely incredible how much this thing is catching!

With no garage for this daily driver, that means exposure to the elements on a very regular basis. In the winter in North Carolina, that also occasionally means snow. It pains me to see her sitting out in the below freezing temperatures with white powder piling up on the bonnet, but that's okay, it'll only toughen her up for the new long, hard life of constant usage she's been sold into.

Wth all the salt and debris that will be on the road for the next few weeks, the full detail I had in store for this 1er may be pushed back until spring rolls around.

Looking good man. I've also pushed my full detail plans back a bit due to weather. We'll see when i get the opportunity again. Your estimate of a full weekend morning to night might actually not be enough depending on your process. Mine ended up being about 2hrs per panel, just for the cut and polish o.o

Full process start to finish is looking like 32hrs for me

What doesn't kill her just makes her stronger.

Like your guard dog, on full alert. Gotta look out for the 1er. Haha

Yes, the more I look into my methods, the more time it appears it will take. No quarrels with that here though. I'll prepare myself with plenty of good podcasts, beer, etc.

Here's to both of us completing our DIY detail attempts here over the next few months

Agreed. I've had garage queens before, but this one was purchased with the intention of being a workhorse for me -- and it's doing very well so far!

Winston (the guard dog) appreciates the compliment! The protection he offers only lasts from afar. As you approach, he'd probably open the door for you, give you a big lick, and hand over the keys.

Cheers to that!!

As a result of discovering this fact I've decided to go panel by panel on my car. Especially with not having access to a hose/easy washing. It sucks doing all the prep work (wash/clay/ISO/etc) just to not be able to finish a panel and have to go to work the next day and then do all the prep over again lol

Luckily I have access to my father's garage (despite not having one myself) as well as the option of borrowing his second vehicle if things run over schedule. A full Friday, Saturday, Sunday of work indoors sounds like it should do the trick for my first full detail. Gathering all the products/tools took far more effort than I had planned, but I've already learned a lot in my research.

In addition to attacking the correction and sealing of the paint, I also plan on doing a full interior cleanse, removing the wheels and giving them their own attention + sealant, fully cleaning the brakes and wheel wells, etc. so my back and hands should be spent afterwards.

OCD would be cleaning the wheels every single day.

I clean the wheel wells, engine bay, door shuts, steering wheel, etc. every single wash and I feel normal!

Oh man, you have no idea who you are talking to. My OCD is through the roof. I'm just too lazy to do it my self. I hire a professional 3 or 4 times a year to detail my car. I also stand there and watch (scrutinize) to make sure everything is done to my satisfaction. I do wash it myself between details though, and it looks beautiful (like new) if I do say so myself. You'd never know I've owned it from Oct 2010.

Great thread. Especially grateful for your tedious efforts in choosing AND installing your parts. You've sold me on the external PCV and more than likely a similar dual-OCC setup!
