Just wanted to say thanks for this. Did my 2nd oil change yesterday (1st one was the 1200 one I did at the dealership). So I did this one around 4400 miles ... has to be the easiest car to change oil on ..

+1. I didn't understand this either. It's my understanding that it's better to be underfilled than overfilled, and I would have left it at 6 quarts if it said "FULL" afterwards (or add another half quart at most) because there's always some residual oil in the engine that does not fully drain out. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just performed my first oil change (at ~2500 miles) and found that 7 quarts was required. The surprising thing was immediately after the oil change, the dash guage read a little low. It was only after running the car to normal operating oil temperature that the guage read full.

Yesterday, I did the oil change myself, and added only 6 quarts. The oil level indicator displayed "OK" after running the engine for a few minutes at idle. Just to be sure, I drove for 10 minutes, and the reading was still good.

Did you have the car on ramps while draining?

if the oil was at temp and on ramps, you'll need to add the other quart (or most of it anyway). it took about 30 minutes for mine to read below the full mark (after filling with the initial 6 qts)

I haven't changed my oil yet because my car hasn't been delivered yet and I don't know why I posted this message.

Yes, and I drained when the oil was at operating temp (~220).
It's been one full day now since adding only 6 quarts, and I've driven about 40 miles. I checked again afterwards, and the reading was still good. In fact, the oil level in iDrive actually shows that it is filled up to "MAX". |

Man, this is messed up. Half of you used 6 quarts and half of you used 7 quarts..
and everyone claims the level is at max. i dont think theyre lying. I just think our electronic level checker is a joke and useless. |

I wonder if draining the oil while the car is at an angle on the ramps causes some oil to not drain out of the engine. That might explain some of the one quart difference. I'll have to take a closer look at the shape of the oil pan the next time.

So what's the final verdict, go by the i-drive dipstick indicator or go by the book at 7qts?

Well I changed my break-in oil today.
I went so far as to measure how much exactly came out the car, using a 5qt jug and a 1qt container of oil, I emptied my drain catch to precisely 6qts. I then added only 6qts into the engine, and fired it up. I pulled the car off the ramps and onto solid surface and let the engine warm up. It idled nice and quietly and after a few moments, i-drive reported my oil level was OK and at the max mark. I'll keep 1qt in the trunk just in case.

^ Just monitor the oil level for the next several days (with driving of course). It may adjust.
As a point of reference, did the oil level indicator show MAX just before the oil change? |

And unlike indicated in the video, I let the oil drain completely with both oil fill cap removed to depressurize the system and oil filter housing cap open and additional oil came out before re-inserting the drain plug. Also my car was up on rhino ramps.

Just to add more input to the thread, I did my first oil change today. I used a BMW kit with BMW 5W-30 oil. Drained while warm, let it drain a long time. Put in 6.5 quarts. Oil dipstick said perfect, max full. I think it says that for anything from 6 quarts to 7 quarts... But the strange thing about this car which I've never had with other cars. You check the oil with the car running... I was just sitting in my garage on ground idling when I checked mine. It took about 2 mins to calculate.
I'm saving the extra 1/2 quart I have left but doubt I will ever need it. |
