Thumbs up Kudos to the BMW Performance Center

It has been a month since I took re-delivery of my 1 from the team at the PerformanceCenter (8/26/08) and I’ve been enjoying the car that much!

I probably sound like a broken record to the other post about the Performance Center Delivery (PCD) but it is an absolute must!

Where else can you drive/beat-on a vehicle similar to yours on a closed course and get to see what the car is capable of?

It was also cool to drive one of the X vehicles on the off-road course to experience its true capabilities.

I want to thank everyone at PCD for the hospitality but I need to give a special shout out to Donnie Isley and Ray Helms for really showing me what the 135i true capabilities are!

I also want to thank Stephen Soncini for adjusting the delivery time for my 1 so that my family and I could hit the road early to start our trek back to Michigan.

For my 135i, I participated in the European Delivery program and PCD. European Delivery was a blast but PCD is an absolute must in my book!

Jeff

I would love to do PCD but I don't like the idea of 700 mile highway drive on a brand new car. I bet it was a blast though.

Yeah, I don't know why they don't have a Perfomance Center at their NA headquarters, which just happens to be right here in NJ.

Donnie is the freaking man. My dad (who went with me) is not really into cars and I think he had a man-crush on him after the "hot lap."

There was a couple in my PCD on 7/21 who were taking delivery of a M3, driving east to Myrtle Beach and then driving back to San Francisco. They planned to stop at friends and family along the way and take 2 1/2 weeks doing it.

I can understand people not wanting to take a one way plane flight to Greenville, SC and driving a long way home. It was less than 2 hours from me so it made it a no brainer. If I had to fly to do it, I would seriously consider it, however. There is an element of safety involved in understanding better the DSC and antilock brakes. And it's a blast!

It's a solid 1200 miles for me and I'm considering it.

The car would be broken in by the time I return home.

same for me!

a shade under 1200 to return to Killeen, TX. and that's taking the long way "off the highway" roads...which I may plan.

Now I just have to get my parents to watch my 3 year old daughter for 4 days while the wife and I make our trip!

Wonderful picture, EINS. You captured very well the look of the PCenter.
Love the weather, BTW. In addition to the mood it makes the track driving more of a challenge, doesn't it?

If you have the time to take a day or two off to go down there and pick it up, DO IT. I just took re-delivery at the Perf Center last week, and it was a wonderful time. I really wasn't sure what to expect going into it. We're now talking about scraping up the money to do another one of their driving courses (maybe the "M" school) next year. The whole program is well-polished, everyone is very friendly, and driving those cars is just plain fun.

(And the hot lap with Donnie in the M3 sedan at the end was just icing on the cake.)

The Performance Center is adjacent to the manufacturing facility which is BMW's only plant in the U. S.. I'm sure they got a lot of tax breaks from SC and the other taxing authorities when they built it. They are finishing a $100M expansion to the manufacturing plant they started before the economic downturn. There is a small museum at the manufacturing plant that anybody can visit, I think.

This area is also just south of the foothills of the Alleghany mountains. There are a number of scenic drives headed mainly to the northeast. I was messing around on the Garmin website yesterday and noticed they now offer a scenic route software upgrade of some sort - might be an option for those planning a trip home if they have a Garmin. Asheville is less than 2 hours north (Biltmore mansion, Grove Park Inn, etc.). The SC shore would be about 3 hours to the east. There are other things to do in the area, in other words.

Plus, you can actually have people coming down and having fun (and spending $$$) on the track in the winter months, too. Who the hell wants to go to New Jersey in January?

Hmm. Actually, who the hell wants to go to New Jersey...EVER?

And agree with JimD - the drive out of the Performance Center is beautiful, especially if you catch the Blue Ridge Parkway.
