I think it is that there are a handful of BMWs that held a certain significance through history.

E30M3 - Yes
E46M3CSL - Yes
1M - Maybe, given the limited production more likely then not.

Where did you get M3 CSL out of "BMW M3 1:25:00"?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/show/powerlaps.shtml

Directly from the TOP GEAR website:

BMW M3 Saloon 1.25.3
Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder 1.25.7
Lotus Evora 1.25.7
Lamborghini Gallardo 1.25.8
BMW Z4 M 1.26.0
Porsche Cayman 1.26.2
Porsche 911 Carrera 2S 1.26.2
Brabus Biturbo Roadster 1.26.2
BMW M5 1.26.2
VXR Bathurst 1.26.3
Lotus Exige 1.26.4
BMW M3 1.26.5 (m)
Jaguar XFR 1.26.7
Chevrolet Corvette 1.26.8
Lexus IS-F 1.26.8
Mercedes CLS 55 AMG 1.26.9
Aston Martin Vanquish S 1.27.1
Aston Martin DB9 1.27.1
Holden Maloo 1.27.1
Telsa Roadster 1.27.2
Porsche 911 GT3 1.27.2
TVR 350C 1.27.5
Nissan 370Z 1.27.5
Audi RS5 1.27.5 (m)
Subaru Cossie 1.27.7 (w)
Camaro 1.27.9
BMW M3 CSL 1.28.0

My point:
The BMW M3 CSL is at 1:28, not 1:25. In the 1:25:00 range the closest M3 is the e90 saloon.

Actually.. I was beginning to wonder why all the CSL defenders.. but the title of the thread is the catalyst..... " Beats M3 CSL on track". As i stated previously... it should actually probably read, fastest BMW ever on TG track.

Still.. while many feel that the E46 M3 CSL is the pinnacle of BMW coupes, as another person stated, the 1M has CSL peformance at proletariat dollars.... and it also available in the US, as well as much more widely than the CSL.

The CSL and the 1M are absoutely different in terms of mission. The 1M is still a road car, whereas cars like the E36 and E46 M3 CSL, and the M3 GTS are clearly track focused machines.

The 1M is going to have similar production to the 1400 CSL made, and with all due respect to CSL owners and fans, many of whom I understand have not seen or driven the 1M... the 1M clearly is well on it's way to carving out it's own niche as one of the most special BMWs ever made.

Again, here's the Top Gear video of the E46 M3 CSL test. The Stig lap is from 08:37 onwards in the video:
http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/bmws-on-the-iom-ii

At 03:25
"And to show you how serious BMW are with this car, look at these tyres: they're like racing slicks. You have to sign disclaimer before you buy a CSL saying that you understand that the tyres won't work in the rain or if it's a bit chilly. What a car!"
At 08:42
"I'll remember the tyres on this car don't work properly when it's cold or wet and it's a bit of both out there today, so The Stig has really got his work cut out."
At 09:44
"Bear in mind, there's the standard M3 [E46 M3] in the dry: 1:31:8. The [911] GT3 we were talking about in the wet: 1:27:2. That's the fastest wet lap so far. Bear in mind Stig did that on CSL's ludicrous tyres. Near slicks, in the damp, so we'll call that a wet lap. Okay, he did that in 1:28:0."

It is possible that the MT, Twin Turbo's, quick steering rack, suspension, chassis, brakes, weight distribution etc is what makes the 1M so quick around the Top Gear track.

I am going to interpret this as 1M = 1 brilliant, brilliant, brilliant M Car

Agreed. Any BMW that "just" wears an M-badge and nothing more, must be special. (unless you paste it on yourself...and a bodykit to hide the fraud... )

The sound of a big V8 at full tilt makes incredible music, an NA I6 not so much. Sounds kind of tinny and not all that impressive. The M engines are masterpieces of technology and make great power but their sound doesnt do much for me. I'll the the FI I6.

They can't compare this lap against the lap with the M3. When they tested the M3 it was pouring rain. Now with the 1M it was only light rain drops.

The 1:25:3 time for the M3 is not specified as a moist or wet lap...
the comp pkg M3 that made 1:26:5 there is a mention that track was moist which is the same condition as 1M got.

I know, since the show is the biggest car show on the planet maybe their budget is just as big.
