dealer left tool under hood
Hi guys,
So I went to the dealer for a coolant leak, got it all fixed. Normally i always check under the hood before leaving, but this time around I just didn't have the time. When I got home, I popped the hood and there was a screwdriver left in there. I let my service adviser know, and he told me to bring it by and they'll check to be sure nothing happened. Should I seriously be concerned that something bad could of happened? I honestly didn't notice anything and I probably would of never noticed anything if I didn't open the hood. Anything I should ask for? |

Is it Snap On? Keep it.
I've left quite a few tools under the hoods of some cars when I was a mechanic, never really cared if they returned. Nothing would have happened though, unless it somehow magically ended up by a belt or pully, but you would know instantaneously. Where exactly did you find it under the hood? |

Pretty funny. Highly unlikely anything happened. Free screwdriver.

Yah I really don't think its serious, a part of me doesn't even want to bother going to the dealership again to have them look at it. But, I figure I might as well go and see what they do/say about it.
I found it between the coolant tank and the edge of the hoodline. The first thing i did, was look at the underside of the hood to see if it was dented in. |

Damn, you almost got a free tool!
Have done that before, no big deal. Actually forgot a magnetic trouble light under a car. Car came back a year later for an alignment and it was still there. Still works too' |

nine times out of ten, a screwdriver is set somewhere offset from anything that could be damaged in the first place, unless the mech has no idea what's going on. It would take a lot more than the tool being there to make some damage. I'd take the screwdriver and hold onto it as a piece of history. Hell, you could use it to fix something on your car yourself. Instant gratification. |

I had an alignment done and about a week went by and I went to put something into the trunk, there were two sandbags (15kg) each in there. Called the alignment shop and they had left them in there.

Being a tech, I've gotten lots of free tools under hoods.. Even had some of my own return after being gone for months

I had a mechanic leave a nut driver in one of my cars, but I also had one steal a torx driver I forgot I left on the floor of the same car too. I guess that balances things out.
I did find a Snap On ratchet in the middle of a road I was driving on. I assume it was from the auto shop which was about 50 feet from where I found the ratchet. I almost ignored it until I kept thinking it looked like a tool. So I stopped the car and ran back to where it was and scored. |

If they leave a tool under your hood it's your tool.
Kinda like finding an umbrella.
