Real 0-60 time for 128
Can anyone who currently owns one can post the actual 0-60 they've attained? Also, do you own the Step or manual? As we all know BMW reports times slower than what is actually possible (especially with a well broken in engine). The older thread regarding this issue was when barely anyone had their cars & there was unfortunately no conclusion.
Videos would be a plus.

I would but there are 2 problems.
1) I can drive a manual but not good enough to get a good 0-60 time. Unless I drank 5 red bulls and listened to some really good music. 2) I am currently breaking it in....will take me a little bit of time for break in... I think 1-2 months maybe 3. |

Car & Driver published a short test of the 128i cabrio with MT in June and got 6.2". As this betters BMW claim by .2", it seems to be right in line with tests of previous BMW models.
http://www.caranddriver.com/buying_g...on+id-187.html (On 5/24, I posted this as a thread on the Coupe/covertible General forum, but not too many folks seemed interested.) While I'm still breaking my 128i MT cv. in, it (subjectively) feels about as quick as my '97 Z3 2.8. IIRC, the Z3 was clocked at 6.1". It had 40 hp less, but 6 more ft./lb of torque - and weighed about 600 pounds less! Tom |

I think it was 6.1 by Car and Driver. Not sure.

The automatic 128 I drove felt a hair faster than my old MKV GTI w/DSG. It could have been the lack of traction off the line for the bunny, but the 128 felt more linear in power, and pulled a lot better in the higher gears. I would guess that the 128 is a strong mid-14 sec car, while the GTI is a strong high 14 sec car. To 60, I would give the edge to the 128, or low 6's, due to better off the line traction. Of course this is my butt accelerometer, but it's usually spot on...
I would guess that the 128 is nestled right between the R32 and GTI for acceleration. It might even trap the same as the R32 in the quarter, though being a few tenths slower. Where's those Youtube videos? lol... |

not to be extremly picky on this issue but vw site says r32 at 6.5 and BMW says 6.1 on a manual tranny im not sure how much the r32 can improve since its an auto tranny

VWOA is much more conservative than BMW when it comes to acceleration numbers. Car and Driver managed a best of 5.4 seconds to 60 in their R32, with the dual clutch tranny and launch control. I would say high 5's would be average in most temps and in lower altitudes. Without launch control, and mashing the throttle, I could see 6.5 as a possibility...

1 second improvement on 0-60 is actually quite fast and very noticeably when pulling from higher speeds.

If the 128i manual can do 0-60 in in 6.0 it should do the 1/4 in about 14.5 sec. Thats not slow by any means. Its actually fast enough. The 135i is just a monster. Overkill I think.

Was there any traction issues that the sport package might help with? I'm thinking the wider rear tires and tighter suspension might drop it a bit more
Thanks for the real world times - it's about damned time

ssrryim still onmy phone
w/o dtc, 1st gear slipped almost the whole way, so i bet wider tires would help. i was surprised the time was better w/ dtc. i ran 3 tests w/ it on, and w/o, to make sure the results weren't flukes. i ran the tests on the highway - no traffic, started from dead stop. my fiancee was in the passenger seat w/ stopwatch. i'm unfortunately at disneyland right now. i'll check the forum tonight! |

About FL tracks: I ran my civic and a z3 coupe and convert at the gainesville test course, (also rode in a 911 turbo) it used to cost about $1500 to rent for a day but if you get 15 friends you can have some real fun w/ 2 cars on the track at a time... there are also groups that run sebring you just need to get in touch w/ the right people.

thanks for the track info jb
just to summarize what I tried to type in on my cellphone before: I ran 6 tests in total from 0 - 60mph. 3 with DTC on, and 3 with DTC off. I listed the best times of each. I dont exaggerate just because I own the car, I was interested in the real numbers. I had my fiancee as my passenger w/ the stopwatch. All the tests were done on the highway from a complete stop (nobody was on the road!) no speed-limits were broken either! :-D with DTC: 6.2 without DTC: 6.6 Without DTC, my rear wheels had some traction but I could still feel them slipping until a bit into 2nd gear (even when shifting to 2nd, there's still some slippage) Do you think not having a passenger would make the time any better? She only weighs like 115lbs. |
