Good answer for typical, sarcastic "oh, u have a 1 series"
Hello, I'm a new BMW owner, in fact, my new 2012 128i convertible hasn't even arrived. When I tell people i just ordered a 1 series I get a really sarcastic look. And the typical questions of "why, u couldn't afford a 3 series?" I tired of explaining that this is the car I really wanted. How would you respond?
btw i ordered an AW, Coral, AW |

You should see some of the comments I got when I told the Corvette community that I traded my C6 for a 1 series. It's pathetic...
I would say don't worry about it and you don't have to justify yourself.

i have 135i with dct. so my reason for not getting 3 over 1 is because 3 series (US spec, exclude is model) does not have twin clutch.
also 1 series road presence is more unique than 3 series. |

I took Performance Center Delivery (PCD) on my 128i vert in 2009. My car was in the lobby so the other owners walked by. One older guy who was getting a X5 walked by and said "that would almost fit in the back of mine". I just ignored it. He and his wife were holding us up up a lot on the mini-autocross too. But they weren't really that obnoxious. They were obviously buying a BMW for status, not to drive it.
Normally the right thing to do when somebody says something stupid is to smile and move on. If they really want to know why I picked a one, I mention that I initially thought of a two seater but decided I needed at least a small back seat (so my two adult kids can ride with me occasionally). The 3 series is not very sporty IMHO, the 1 series is. I never seriously considered a 3. I did look at a Miata and I thought about a Mustang (I've had them as rentals). I did not want a family sedan. It's a silly question to begin with. I mean do they really think we can afford a $40k 1 series but cant seem to get enough financing/cash for the extra $5 of a 3 series coupe? Seriously.....?

I tell them to meet me at the nearest red light if they really care for an answer. Besides, most people that ask that question are simply looking for reasons to make themselves feel better about their own crappy lives. Give them a few dollars and ask them to move along.

Personally if anyone asks me I simply tell them that it is just a preference thing. I feel more connected to a smaller car. Since I am a BMW type of guy there was only one obvious choice. I just wish my salesman would have told me the 1M was coming out. I had absolutely no clue.

I usually tell people that the 1-series weighs 300 lbs lighter, and that everyone has a 3-series, but you never see the 1-series on the road. I don't want to drive a car that everyone has. The interior space is actually very similar, it is the exterior dimensions and trunk space that are different.

I'd tell them if I got the 3 series, my family will only eat twice a day instead of three. I'm pretty sure you'll be the center of their lives for a few days.

I tell them the truth... I test drove a 3er and didn't like it. I'm one of those rare people who buys the car they like the best at that time, regardless of brand or status. I was ready to buy an E92 but when it came out I just hated the design. It was sooo soft and feminine. The 1er came out in the meantime and it was just perfect.
I make no bones about it, I still believe the best car I've ever owned is my GTI as far as all around satisfaction.

My SA was trying to sell me a 3 series because it was so much "bigger" and almost the same price. But after driving both cars I bought the 135 because frankly it rocked. The 335 was just a little too big and didn't have the same feeling that the 135 did on the road. Also my other car is a jcw mini so the 335 just felt wrong to me. I would tell these folks if they have ever actually driven the two cars because otherwise they should just keep their mouths closed.

Hahahaha I like this answer. People who aren't too quick to pick up sarcasm will be mortified. Goes in like with the "i afforded $40,000 but i obviously couldn't afford $5,000 more for a bigger, less fun car" comment.

Because I like driving a pocket rocket that you don't see at every light. I bought b/c it's a drivers car and not a status symbol.

Most people just think the bigger the number on the car the nicer or "better" it is. So I guess if you have a 7 series you are the king.

Here is my answer: "Hey, buddy, how come you have a 3-series? Are you too durned cheap to get a 5-series? And how long shall we keep up this useless one-upmanship; until we get to the 7-series? Or until you get some common maturity?"
