Hi all, I have recently had some bits and pieces added to my car (135i), and have ended up with a bit of an issue. At around 90-120kph, if I put any load/torque on the car in 4/5/6th gear, the whole car vibrates.... Not as severe shuddering, but a noticeable vibration. It's frustrating... As below these speeds, the car appears fine.

There are no error codes, and I've had it checked and its not missing or HPFP. It appears to be coming from the rear end, but as is the case sometimes, it could be engine related and vibrating through the car.

I had the following work done which has bought this issue on:
M3 rear bushes
M3 rear sway bar
Valve clean
New coils and plugs
Engine/transmission oils changed

Ever since I picked the car up with these done, the issue has been there. I thought maybe with the valve clean and 'more power' that it could have been causing the tailshaft to vibrate, but ultimately, all the valve clean has done is take the car back to 'as new' power, and for the sake of 10 or so extra rwkw, can't see this being an issue.

I've had the car back at the mechanics twice, whom have checked the tailshaft and had it re-aligned and found all rubbers within still ok.

I have since added a Cobb, but this was installed after this issue began, so not the cause of it.

90% of my driving is country driving, but I find the car extremely uncomfortable to drive with this issue now. It's frustrating, as it wasn't there before this work was done.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue? I have searched online, but cant seem to find any definitive answers.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year, and thanks for your help.

Probably one of your coil packs electrical socket is not fully engaged. Or you have a bad coil pack and or spark plugs. Did you use plugs bought from a dealer? IF not thats probably your problem. Don't use aftermarket plugs, only OE not OEM!

Thanks Dackelone for the quick reply! If this is so, would it not come up with an error code? Greatly appreciate your help

Since the prop shaft has been checked, what's the mechanics new diagnosis?

Oh yeah, is there any sound associated with it?

I used to get this buzzing sound when accelerating at a certain RPM. Turned out to be exhaust touching something.

But yeah, does it feel more engine related or something else? Does the entire car vibrate or just a certain part.

Harri does this still happen when the Cobb is set to the stock map?

Initially I thought it only happened after the Cobb, and it was just a result of putting too much torque through the driveline at higher gears (which is a common issue in tuned N54 manual cars)

Thanks for all your replies gents!!

Iain/Dackelone, I'll get the plugs and coils checked later today, and hopefully this fixes it, as have a long drive to adelaide tomorrow

Beemer, will check the wheel nuts when I get to the car next..

Zuzu/alex... Will check the exhaust, but it's a lot more noticeable than what I think that would be, but will check either way.

Staurt, it did this before I got the cobb, so still when the car was stock. It was only after the coils/plugs were changed, and the bushes/sway bar changed, so has to be something related to these.

Again.... I really appreciate ur thoughts guys, as have a massive drive tomorrow, so want to try what I can before I leave to fix this.

Cheers again!

Does this happen during acceleration, or deceleration? Occasionally, I have some vibration when taking my foot off the accelerator, after a hard acceleration at highway speeds. It doesn't last long, and seems to come from binding in the differential. This is on a 2011 135i, with 34,000Miles/55,000Kms...

In other cars I've has this sort of vibration turned out to be suspension related. Perhaps something is loose or not torqued correctly and is vibrating at speed.

It's only under throttle (not full, but gets worse the more you press on), and only when travelling above 80-90kph. If I take my foot off the throttle, the vibration stops.

Fair enough then. Sounds like an electrica or ignition gremlin. Sounds lik something is not making a clean enough contact. Perhaps a misfiring coil pack.

Does the vibration get worse with speed?

Unfortunately no luck today.... Tried everything and still the same. Seems to be torque related, and everything is pointing to the driveshaft.... So will get it checked again and see if they can do anything in adelaide. Thanks again for all the comments today. Will keep you posted if I get it sorted.

Safe travels, and merry Christmas!

My vote is the spark plugs. One or more of them are misfiring under load. I've seen it before in boosted cars with too much plug gap or the wrong heat range. Did the exact same thing. My .02 cents

Taking the car in to get the drive shaft/coils/plugs checked again in the new year. It has to be one of these three things as these changes are what started the problem. It is extremely frustrating, but will keep you all posted with the progress.....
