128i wheel width questions

Hey guys,

I've been looking around for a new set of wheels for a while and am constantly overwhelmed about every spec I have to get right. As I understand it, my 128i Sport pkg. has 7"-wide front wheels and 7.5"-wide rears. My tires are the stock size, 205/50 front 225/45 rear, 17". I'm considering the offset of all the wheels I've looked at, but how much does that half-inch matter when it comes to the width? If I KEPT my tires, would I be able to mount 7.5" wheels all around? Or even 8-inchers? Or would I have to stick with the staggered width? I don't want my tires to look stretched, I'm just not sure how much that half-inch would affect the mounting of my tires, or if I could get away with mounting 8" wheels all around as well.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: Copied this because I originally accidentally posted it to the 1M section

I guess you could mount a 205 mm tire on an 8" wheel. It's not ideal, but it's probably still within specs. The question is, why would you want to? I can understand saving cost, but at least upgrade the 205 to a 225 so you can have a square setup. Just make sure your wheel offset is reasonable and you can easily run 225s in front on an 8" wheel.

The 8" option was a last resort-I've found enough 7.5" options to work, though at that point I'd have a square wheel width with staggered tires (205 7.5 front, 225 7.5 rear), because most of the wheels I've found don't have both 7.5" AND 8" options. I'm wondering if that would work too because at this point I can't find setups with 8" rear 7.5" front for a single wheel style.

Here are some of the wheels I've found so far for reference:

Hope those all work

Hey I have a question about my BMW 128i. I want to put 19x10 rotiform las-r with a 40 offset. Will these fit on my car? I lowered my car on mono ss coilovers and it’s lowered about 1 1/2 inches.

No chance without major body work. Also - you should post this in a separate thread as this is unrelated to the OP's questions.

Why do you insist on running a 205 on the front, when you could just as easily run a 225 there too?

Only because I just bought a set of tires with the stock Sport package staggered setup. At some point I could go square, or maybe 245/225 but not for a while.

The rated rim width range for 205/50R17 tires goes up to 7.5 inches. So you're ok to go with 7.5 square wheels on these tires until such time that you are ready to replace the tires with 225/45 all around. This can be expedited by rotating your wheels, to put the 225's on front and 205's on rear, and proceeding to hoon* it a bit.

Alternatively, you could spend a little more money to do it the 'right' way by buying a pair of 225/45's to replace the 205/50, and selling the 205/50's for pennies on the dollar on craigsface or to a local 'used tire' dealer.

Ok good to know, I'm pretty much set on some Voxx Capos (17x7.5 +38) right now. I probably will get a set of 225s for the front now that you mention it, as long as that new offset won't be an issue. I haven't had a problem with grip so it would be a more cosmetic reason than anything else. Thanks for the advice!

Edit: You said the max width for a 205 is 7.5", if I went with 225s all around would I be able to fit 8"-wide wheels as well?

Check out the specs of the tires you're considering they'll include a wheel width range.

Long story short, 225/45 is fine on both 7.5 and 8.0 wheels.

Just to touch base on the staggered setup from factory:
This is really common practice on RWD cars, the engineers do it so the car understeers at the limit of traction. It's widely considered a "safer" setup than oversteer on the limit.

As far as wheel width, generally speaking it's a good idea to use as wide a wheel as possible for the given tire size to support it as much as possible. If you're considering moving to 225 square, I would suggest running 8" square wheels - but that's only my $0.02.
