Water pump failure signs

What are the typical signs or a water pump getting ready to fail? (09 135I) I have noticed that I can hear my water pump running after I shut off the car. it does not stay on long but was not sure if this is an indicator or issues to come.

Yes, does it seem pretty loud too? I would start it and let it sit at idle for five minutes, it will probably go ka-blewy...meaning you should get the overheat code along with a very loud fan.

Arrow electric waterpump failure poll...

What's so scary is that there are NO signs for most failures. One day it works, the next day your getting towed in.

Sometimes you might notice a loss of coolant or coolant collecting inside of the belly tray.

Some members say there radiator fan go right to HIGH speed on a cold start. This means your pump is close to death.

Basically IF your around 60K miles on the original pump... its time. Around 70K to 80K and you are on borrowed time. Check out my water pump failure poll.

Mine failed at 55K miles.

My fan would run super high on cold starts and would randomly speed up while at idle

This is next on my maintenance schedule. I'm at 75k and the original pump. I know it needs to be done relatively soon. Is there a aftermarket option that you know of such as Meyle-HD or are we stuck with using OEM pumps?

You certainly have put some miles on that baby. No wonder you're looking for another DD.

As far as I know, there's only the OEM Continental branded water pumps

I really did not trust the aftermarket when it comes to a water pumps. When I looked online OEM pumps and then talking to my dealer... My dealer could do the job for not much more.

My dealeronly charged me two hours(maybe less I have to look at my receipt) to replace the e-pump, thermostat and U-shape hose that connects the two parts. I think the parts alone were around 400 euros(without the tax - 19% over here!).

When I looked online most places wanted about $500 for the pair. Plus $50 for that U-hose and then I would have to had to deal with the install and bleeding. I knew my dealer could give me a good price/deal on everything. But then again I have a very good relationship with them. Friends of mine in Munich have paid closer to 1K euros for the waterpump repair. I paid 600ish.

Btw... I was at 76K miles on mine.

Mine failed suddenly and with absolutely no warning. My repair order (dealer, CPO) reads:

READ FAULT MEMORY, FC 377A STORED FOR COOLANT PUMP SWITCHED OFF DUE TO BLOCKAGE

Seems the impeller might have broken apart, where have we seen that before :O/

I see in your sig you have 55K miles, curious to know how many miles did you have when your water pump failed?

I was pretty unhappy when this happened. Fact is, however, this is the only problem the car has had since I bought it Nov '14... and because I was CPO at the time, all this really turned into was a lost evening and a few bucks.

Any recommendations on a source for a H2O pump and are there aftermarket alternatives that are better? I live in AZ and its that time of year when I can't have an unexpected failure. (supposed to be 117* today)

Mine failed over this past weekend. It gave me no sign of impending failure other than the car losing power and almost going into limp mode 2 days before failing.

Which is why I installed the P3 vent gauge in my 128. I hate that the manufacturers are doing away with these, same with our daughter's Mazda 3.

Mine was replaced shortly before I purchased the car - paperwork stated "clicking waterpump" - so it was replaced at around 50k miles.
