Water Pump Failure?

Hey there ladies and gentlemen. So today i was driving my car and a car almost hit me and i downshift and pressed the gas. Next you know my car is not moving, its barley going anywhere. Next thing you know my car turns off at the red light about 4 times in a row. Is it the water pump that is failing? I took a pic of the code that came on. My car had 85xxx miles. Only Mod is catless midpipes and muffler delete. Please let me know . I need to fix this problem ASAP. Thank you in advance.

Was your car overheating? From the picture you supplied, your temperature looks fine. Also your TPMS light is on?

I really think you need to supply more information (And information in better english, no offence). A better discription of what actually happened would be helpful.

sorry i was really in a rush to figure this thing out. Well, It was no over heating acutally. But my engine sounded like it was over heating. I touched my radiotor piping. The lower passenger side was cold, but the driver side top piping was REALLY hot. Do you know what the problem might be from what i am explaing? Thanks!

More likely a theromostat problem would be my guess. Waterpumps dont normally fail to the point they stop pumping. The waterpump is a mechanical feature of an engine and will usually leak or slowly fail rather than just sporatically stop working.

The place you fill coolant in, was sorta leaking, and it tasted sweet, which i heard that the water pump might be the problem, but the theromostat might be the problem too.

Yeah i left my car in a random street which i hate and never do. I let the car cool down and got it into my garage. Now im waiting till monday to get it looked at.

No it does not! Your car is over heating(!) bc that is what that yellow cooling icon means! Have your car towed to a dealer or indi - do not drive it! You most likely need a water pump and thermostat. Dan @United and Jason @Tischer both sell a kit for about $700. I think at the dealer this is a $1,300 repair. You might see IF it is covered under the powertrain warranty. ?

You can have a low oil temp and have a high water temperature. Since we do not have a water temp gauge BMW gave us these warning(idiot) lights.

And yea... why is your TPMS light on too?

Didn't even notice that was an oil temp gauge and not a water temp one. Shows how long i've had this car for....

I really think a proper, in person diagnosis is in order however.

Thanks for the help. The TPMS is on because i took off the TPMS for my new wheels. I will take the car to a INDI tommrrow and see what the problem is. So it is the water pump? Thanks

Had it happen to me about 2 months ago on the freeway. Electric water pump failure. You need to tow your car to the shop. Mine was covered under CPO but it would have cost $1400 according to dealer. Good luck.

Pump is driven electrically and has plastic impeller. Very common with that amount of mileage. This condition will also cause the fans to run fast and noise is very evident from what I understand. Good luck and like others have stated get it towed.

that's exactly what happened to me. you will be able to start the car and drive for about 10 minutes - basically until it gets warm, then the warning lights will start popping up and the engine will go into limp mode until it finally shuts itself off. if you have any suspicion your water pump has gone, listen for the extra-loud whirring of a cooling fan trying to keep up with the otherwise disabled cooling system.

Wow that really looks scary I remember there was recomendation for AUDI S4 B5 to replace water pump and thermostat every 60 000 km together with timing belt. Is there a regulation from BMW how many KM's?

It seems like a lot 1ers are now experiencing water pump failures. I'm scared every time I drive now! Are there aftermarket water pumps that might last longer?

no there isnt any regulation, ive replaced the electric water pumps as low as 5500 miles and as high as 135000 miles, it varies also what we have been finding is when we got customers that come in with undervoltage issues it will sometimes take out the t stat or water pump, usually will set a coolant pump speed deviation fault or thermostat activation fault

Since this technology is relatively new for BMW, therefore the lifecycle of the pump isn't yet known, we have been recommending replacement every 80-100k miles. This package of OE/OEM parts covers everything with Original BMW coolant offered to finish off the job. A proper bleeding procedure must be followed with the new electric pump.

the first round of N52's came with a aluminum thermostat housing but i guess they figured it was more cost effective to go with plastic, they were failing at the same rate as the plastic ones, so they just stuck with plastics for all the models

ill never understand why, when the car has that symbol on the dash, and is shutting itself off, people still try and fire it up..
