Compartment next to battery
So I've owned my 135i for about two months now and I'm still flummoxed by the compartment next to the battery.
(Sorry for the rotated picture). What the heck are those two brass threaded inserts for? Something has to mount there. I've searched the forum with no luck, I've seen people ask the question but nobody has the answer. I thought maybe it was for the CD changer, but that mounts on the left side of the trunk. I thought maybe it was for the mobility kit or possibly a jack, but those come in canvas bags I think. Realoem gives no info as to their purpose, but it does give a replacement part # for the insert in case you strip one out! Also, where is the toolkit supposed to go? Is it just supposed to rattle around in that huge compartment? Is there something to strap it down? Is it supposed to go in the rear of the compartment (toward the rear of the car, behind that small raised plastic divider)? |

If I had to make a guess, it might be points to hold the roadside kit that's typically required in the EU. I think you have to have a break down roadside triangle and other bits. Strictly a guess on my part. I've owned two 1 series and both had exactly the same thing you have in the pic.

https://www.1addicts.com/forums/atta...6&d=1540100001 OP, the compartment you're referring to is always empty in US-spec cars, sans the toolkit in the small vinyl pouch. Some like to secure it using the little elastic strap on the driver's side of the trunk, but I'm almost sure the actual purpose of the band is to hold a quart of oil. |

I've bought two new 135i's and the compartment in both of them looked just like yours, OP.
Welcome to the forum and congrats on your 1er, btw. Post some pics when you have time.

They're always empty from what I've seen, I've made the storage space fit my own needs. I've also considered dremelling out those two threaded nubs to help my stuff fit better.
You can still fit a good amount under there, for me; tow rope, first aid kit, tool set, oil, lug wrench for wheels, fuses, and a bag with more emergency goodies in the side compartment. I also have the triangle kit up top. 20170705_165610 by Matt Steele, on Flickr 20170705_165549 by Matt Steele, on Flickr 20170705_165601 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

I hear ya on making use of that storage. I keep a small scissors jack, collapsible lug wrench, shop towels, multi tool, tire plugs and a compressor back there. Need to add a small set of sockets and screw drivers. Asking ol St Nick for a small canvas bag to put on the right side cubbie of the trunk for other "needed" stuff

Thanks to all you folks for all the help and excellent recommendations. I'd been wondering about that strap on the left side of the trunk, the bottle of oil makes a ton of sense.
I'm still fixated on what is supposed to attach to those two threaded posts. I did notice on realoem that there are two versions of the mobility system; one in a canvas bag and one fitted into a foam tray. Here is picture of the foam tray model: The real foam tray (Item #3) might not look anything like the picture, and maybe it's supposed to be screwed down? Anyone ever get one of these? |

Hmm I may have found it. Here's a picture of "Oryginalny zestaw naprawczy do opon BMW E82 E88.jpg" from some Polish BMW parts supplier (image below). The Polish phrase means "Original tire repair kit" according to Google translate. They have other foam trays that fit other BMW models.
It does seem to fit the shape of the compartment and the holes are in sort of the right place. My guess is that this is supposed to go in the compartment and the tool roll would fit behind it, towards the rear bumper. Last edited by joeswamp; 12-03-2018 at 04:11 PM.. |

Wow, the things you learn!!
I'd be interested in getting one, but then where would I store the owners manual folder? Edit: That and you're probably looking at $300 worth of mobility kit there. |

Nice, I didn't notice that one as being a fit for the E82/E88 battery pan and tray when I did an image search for part number 71106792863 from the RealOEM part diagram. I agree that it leaves a bit of room for the toolkit towards the trunk. The diagram also lists a velcro strap (hook and loop, lol) to secure it all as a single piece.
The compressor and the bottle of tire sealant are also specific to the styrofoam mold and are not the same as the type found in the bagged kit that I have. By the way, BMW has updated the bagged mobility kit from the old style in my car to a newer design which has the sealant and compressor together as an integrated unit. ECS lists the mold for $42.97, so I guess it's worth a shot. The sealant is pretty cheap too, but the compressor is a cool $100 from a quick glance. One thing I notice is that it doesn't secure to the nuts that are integrated into the battery pan tray, so those remain a mystery |

Didn't even think of oil. I've kept an umbrella in there.

And it comes to about $150 all together or a a bit more than the mobility kit that comes in the zippered bag. |

It looks like the bottom of this strap is supposed to be secured to something. I think this might be the key to the threaded nuts in the trunk floor pan. In addition to the strap, realoem refers to a plug, P/N 52208133466, as part of the 1 series mobility kit: Maybe these plugs fasten the bottom of the strap to the trunk floor? Just a theory, but it's the best one I've got. I suspect there were some markets in which this car was sold without runflats, and in these markets they needed to provide this setup. The 1M comes with a kit like this but it has a different trunk floor and so the foam base is completely different. Now of course BMW supplies the "mobility kit in a bag" which works on every car, which adds to the confusion. Since the vast majority of E82/88's were sold with runflats, very few people have seen the kit that's fitted to the compartment. |

And yeah, it's odd the velcro strap doesn't appear on the 1 Series mobility kit diagram with its own visual representation. The tray itself also looks pretty far off from the actual design as well. Probably just a stock image they used. Anyway, it all just means someone here has to buy one, assemble it all and share some photos! |
