Other than a few two-seat roadsters how many cars today are under 3,000lbs? The only one that comes to mine is what I own a Mazda RX8 and that is only if you get the sport model with less content. It doesn't have remotely the power of a 135/335 engine.

Sports coupes are niche vehicles and smaller or leaner 1 series would be even more niche. At the end of the day it's still about making money and the 1 series as it is now should make BMW a fair amount.
I agree that it can be a kind of an apples to oranges comparison, but it's interesting that the '85 E30 325e weighed about what the estimate is for the 135i.

On the other hand a '73 2002 weighed in at 2282 lbs | 1035.1 kg, which is obviously from another era.

I suspect (keeping my fingers crossed) that both the 128i and 135i (and 123d for Europe) will have more than adequate power and be a blast to drive. The E30 325e's certainly were intertaining with only 121 hp and 170 lbs.-ft torque propelling over 3400 lbs.

3400 lbs for an E30 !! No way whatsover...

A very quick google reveals 2780 lbs (and yes these are for the US model...)

Come on guys, what do they say - 90% of stats are made up on the spot ?

Seriously...3400 lbs for an E30. It varied depending on the model, but it did not exceed 3000 lbs.

The weight mentioned previously for the E30 325e was the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), which includes a full load.

How about Taiga?

I owned the 1973 tii above for almost 30 years ... selling it two months after buying a 2002 MINI Cooper S.

Looking forward to test driving a 135i ... to see how it compares to the experience of driving a MINI.

the estimate for the 135i has never included this GVWR / full load (600 pounds?) so you are hardly doing a fair comparison are you ?

The 135i would be 3800 pounds in that case.

It was the number provided in the '85 BMW brochure for the 325e. No need to shoot the messenger.
