Yes, tilt the shift level towards you and it will be in DS (Sport) mode.

My car feels like it has a split personality between auto and sport mode. So much more oommppphhh in sport mode. I also have paddle shifters and a performance steering wheel with the shift lights. Great fun using the paddles in sport mode with the shift lights turned on. I took an AMG SL with ease in this mode.

I'm almost always driving exclusively in DS, a lot more fun. Tho I find it VERY hard for a 128i to beat out a AMG. I'm gonna have to agree with Add1ct, it must have been a bad driver or he simply didn't care.

I think what you are noticing is throttle response. My wife's 328i is the same way: It is much more sensitive in DS than in D. Wish the manual transmission let you choose too! Mine is too D and it needs to be more DS
