Manual Transmission Drivers: Younger or Older?
Me and a friend of mine have been having this discussion about who prefers a manual transmission. I think mostly younger drivers do, and my friend thinks that mostly older drivers do.
Or is it a mix of both? I personally would prefer a manual transmission, but because of an injury to my left foot and ankle, I can't work a clutch anymore. I am young… at heart. What do you think?

I'm in my 40s and my 135i DCT is my first auto in a long time. The last auto car I had was my first car back when I was 16. While I don't mind the DCT, I still sort of wish at times I had a manual.
With my sport bikes (or any sport bike for that matter), all manuals...no choice. |

I only have one friend that drives a manual. To add to that, two other friends (as far as I know) CAN drive a manual, the rest just cant.
We're all in our late 20's. Now, I think, all of my elders have learned how to drive stick, though none of them has a manual car anymore. None of them are car enthusiasts though. I do have a friend in his early 50's that drives manual. Car enthusiast.

52 with MT, I track the car frequently, and do all the maintenance myself...

36 [female] - MT from the day i learned to drive; my lower spine was fused awhile back and the one thing they told me was that i wouldn't be able to operate a clutch - but i STILL can!! i also do most of the work on her myself and my other car is an E36 328is..
my grandfather drove a stick until he was about 87 and then had to stop for the last 5 years b/c his knees just woudn't do it.. my mom can also drive a stick but not daily my partner [36 - male] drives a MT my little brother [33] drives a MT when he has a car my father used to drive a stick- RIP I have one friend who drives stick - male, 25 I think part of it is access/ability to learn - I mean who wants to teach someone on YOUR clutch?? - plus in the US it is made out to be scarry.. anyway everyone else sucks and will never get seat time in my car! I would be interested to see the male/female split as I bet almost 90% are male, but hey prove me wrong--! I read somewhere that only 6% of vehicles in the US are MT |

I have an L5/S1 fusion and was told it wouldn't happen but, in large part due to BMW sport seats, I figured out how to make it work and even though I cannot feel huge hunks of the foot/ankle as a whole, I can control its movement.. For now...
Not sure how long it will last so gonna enjoy it while I can because some things are just out of our control... but driving is one of the few, last things that I truly enjoy, am so free while doing, and was not taken away from me in the accident.. [4x4 jeep pulled out/making a left right in front of me - i was doing 40 in a 45 on a 4 lane divided roadway - was like hitting a wall - no skid marks b/c not even time to hit the brakes - my 6 mo old 330ci was crushed to the firewall and took 3 mo to fix - that was the day the EMTs told me the BMW saved my life and the day brand loyalty started to mean something to me] Sorry about your ankle getting so messed up - though a mustang is a shitty car and def. the toughest clutch I have ever had the >>> of dealing with! I did loose all feeling and fuxn of my left leg for 2 weeks awhile back [due to lasting nerve damage] and so i sat on my couch w/ my leg on the table pretending to push the clutch - after two weeks and a little extra support I was able to do it again - so don't give up hope.. I think if that [clutch] was taken away from me as well then I might have just totally lost it - the last bit of "control" gone - i loathe the day i really have to give it up |

I can drive stick but purposefully chose an auto. Wife would never be able to learn although she never drives it. If I take the big car I don't want her stranded. I don't need to heal toe shit, I live in the city and have a lot of bland driving. If I lived where there was some nice driving, my tune would probably change. I think the only car I would buy in a stick would be a classic muscle car.

38 - mt. I think it's mostly older people who had more manuals when we were learning to drive. Young people that drive manuals are mostly car enthusiast IMO - which this forum has a lot of but its probably not representative of the overall population.
The country of origin also plays a part too I bet. |

38 - MT.
tried the dual clutch thing for 2 years and was bored out of my mind. Never again as long as I have a choice in the matter. |

1st and "only" car was MT (learned to drive in a MT and LOVED) Primary\"only" Cars 2, 3, and 4 were AT's (wasn't doing the buying, so I took what was given...happily) Car 5 was MT (I swore off AT's FOREVER after cars 2, 3, and 4) Primary Car 6 was AT (I swore off AT's "FOVERVER" until I met DSG and fell in love) Primary and "only" Car 7, the 135i, is DCT I say with absolutely no shame I prefer dual clutch Auto's to MT's. That said, with the way conventional AT's are going these days, there are some I would take over a MT. NOTE: Both secondary daily's I had for a couple years were AT's (I got rid of my last dail car two years ago due to lack of necessity for one) Last edited by davis449; 09-28-2014 at 11:40 AM.. |
