TPMS Question when going to a bigger rim and different tire size
Just ordered VMR 710 19 stagger and was curious to know if I needed to take the vehicle back to BMW to reset my TPMS? Resetting the TPMS is not a problem, I dont have iDrive but I reset it before when it was low. Now with the newer rims, and tire size, will my PSI level change and if so, will the TPMS adapt of does a new PSI number needs to be set in the computer system?
Wonder if my question makes any sense.... |

I am assuming when you say set your pressure, this has to be done at the BMW dealer?

Set the correct psi for your tires, then reset the tpms. I'm sure you can reset thru your on board computer.

I think I understand now. Mount the new rims with the correct psi as labeled for the tires and reset the TPMS subsequently and the system will adjust?

Urrrr Ummm.... when you guys hit the RESET button on the turn signal stalk... I thought all it does is reset the LINK from the ECU to the TPMS (sensors).
I do not think it re-sets the "base" tire pressures - that the system will set off the Alarm/Warning lights. Last edited by Dackelone; 09-18-2010 at 05:49 AM.. |

The way my salesman explained it was that when you reset the TPMS with the stalk, it sets the base tire pressure to the current pressure in the tires.

I don't understand again, you would think the tmps is set for certain base psi. Resetting the tmps shouldn't reset the new psi, because what if you reset it at a much lower psi, then that is going to be your new expected reading... Doesn't make sense, anyone running 19s chime in?

For example, if you decide 12 psi is the correct pressure, and reset the system with that inflation, then 12 psi is your new baseline. Also, anytime a tire has been remounted to the rim, no matter what the pressure, the TPM must be reset as it will show an error. So to answer your earlier question, inflate your tires to the correct pressure for your application (see the placard on the driver's door jamb) and then reset the TPM system as described in your owner's manual. The dash warning should go out and remain off unless the pressure subsequently drops in one or more tires. Tom |

Tom you are correct indeed. I read my owners manual too and that is how BMW explains the TPMS. I learned something new today! I did not know we need to tell the TPMS when the tires are set to the correct psi pressure. I always assumed that the system was smarter than that. page 68. |

It's my understanding that there is no 'base pressure' that is monitored. Our systems merely check for a pressure differential between any two wheels of the set and alert when this occurs.
My recollection of reading the manual is that this is one of two systems in use, the least expensive of the two (the other does actually monitor specific pressures), and the one BMW selected for use, ianc

Below is the final from the DOT
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/ruli...nal/index.html B. Part One of the Final Rule -- November 2003 through October 2006 1. Summary The first part of this final rule establishes requirements for vehicles manufactured between November 1, 2003, and October 31, 2006, subject to a phase-in schedule. (52) The final rule requires passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less, except those vehicles with dual wheels on an axle, to be equipped with a TPMS to alert the driver that one or more of the vehicle's tires are significantly under-inflated. For these vehicles, the first part of the final rule provides two compliance options. (53) Under the first compliance option, a vehicle's TPMS must warn the driver when the pressure in one or more of the vehicle's tires, up to a total of four tires, is 25 percent or more below the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold inflation pressure for the tires, or a minimum level of pressure specified in the standard, whichever pressure is higher. Under the second compliance option, a vehicle's TPMS must warn the driver when the pressure in any one of the vehicle's tires is 30 percent or more below the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold inflation pressure for the tires, or a minimum level of pressure specified in the standard, whichever pressure is higher. (54)
