Question Need help getting/finding part

My steering wheel airbag cover is damaged, specifically the roundel in the center, and I'd like to get another one. However it seems the cover may be part of the entire airbag unit and not available separately?

I found this on Realoem.com, has anyone seen this cover on its own without the airbag?

Any help appreciated!

Dumb question, but I'll ask anyway...

You already had the airbag recall done, right?

So it got damaged after the recall?

According to my local dealership my car was never eligible for the airbag recall, too late of a build to have the same airbags or something like that. This was the first thing I tried haha, and it's been damaged for a while.

Guess it wasn't a dumb question, after all. lol

Assume you already checked your VIN on a recall site?

This is probably a time you'd like to be part of a recall.

Yessir! You did spark an idea to call the dealership again though, going to ask if they have any spares laying around from the many swaps they've done.

You never know, you might get lucky. Especially if you have a good relationship with them. Can't hurt to ask.

Ugh no one has any, they all get shipped back overseas apparently. Hunt continues.

I've taken the airbag out when I installed the Nelson Racing Wheel paddle kit. You're right as the cover/roundel is an integral part of the airbag. So the entire airbag has to be replaced or if you can pry loose the roundel and find some aftermarket substitute.

It's strange your car isn't part of the recall. My car is a 2013 with a 7/2013 build date and I was part of the recall.

That's interesting.... maybe they never processed the Germany to NA transfer of my VIN properly like I requested.

Really? My 2013's DOB is 23 January, 2013 and it had the recall done.

Show them this document and ask for proof that the recall has been done on your car, otherwise demand for a recall to be performed:

Obviously they didn't transfer your VIN over to North America, Matt. Good thing this came up because you probably would've kept driving unknowingly with a faulty airbag and possibly never got it replaced.

Until this happens...

when I bought my 135i mine was damaged also. BMW told me that it was part of the airbag. My 09’ came to the states in 13. An US Airman owned it in Germany & brought it to the states when he moved here. When the BMWUSA Recall for the airbags came out mine wasn’t part of the recall. I seriously called & emailed BMWUSA several times asking that I’m making a reasonable request to be added to the recall. It took over 1yr of politicking to be added to the recall. I to this day don’t know if it was because of me asking for my reasonable request or was my vin finally added.

Funny story to add. When I bought the car from the Airman there was no US title yet. I bought his car and waited three to four months. After I bought my 1serirs I took it to BMW to see if they could run the vin or stick my key in that reader. BMW had nothing for me, it was like I bought another brand of car. After getting the BMW finally register here in the states, BMW sent me a whole new package of all the books that come w/ the car that are in your glove box. Now when I go to BMW they recognize my car as one of there’s.

True story

All recalled airbags have to be either destroyed at the dealership or sent back to BMW for destruction.

Not worth the risk fitting a recalled airbag.

You can try to buy one but if parts are in short supply they may not sell them to you. The up side is that they are heaps cheaper than they were prior to the recall

No updates, been soaking up the Miami sun for the past week-ish. Now that I'm back in wonderful 50F and rainy DC I'll be looking into it more this week lol.

They record the old airbag serial number and the new airbag serial number when they file a claim now, so pretty sure you couldn't get a recalled airbag even if you wanted to. lol
