This is kind of embarrassing
My n54 engine recently stated its oil was at minimum level and I could hear the valves making some serious noise at the street lights. I went to Walmart that night and topped it off with two quarts of the same synthetic. I know it said add one quart but I figured that was just to get it in an acceptable level, rather than max. After reading further, I realized the difference between minimum and maximum is only one quart. Idrive says oil is at max now, and not over max. I'm still planning on draining the excess quart today, with a total of 27 miles on the odometer since. Should I be worried of anything getting messed up already? I do, however, already have a minor oil pan gasket leak already which I'm planning on fixing soon. Maybe that's a good thing in a bad way, to let the excess oil drip out a tiny bit. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

My first question is are you posting this in the 1 series forum to avoid embarrasment and harrasment from the 3 series crowd? LOL Personally I would take the time to do a complete oil change and make sure everything is done correct, especially if you already have to replace a gasket.

Keep a spare quart in the trunk.
Long as you haven't driven very far you should be ok, a full oil change would definitely be the best solution. So...who is forwarding this thread to e90post? lol

Yeah the lack of a dipstick still blows my mind on these newer BMW engines.

Just change your own oil and that way you will know you have the correct amount in there.

The electronic dipstick is in no way accurate. Basically there is maybe a 1L leeway at the maximum point and then from maximum to minimum it may be another 0.5-1L.
I know this because my car consumes >1L of oil every 1000kms. After a fresh oil change it takes definitely over 1000kms for it to begin to drop from maximum. Once it finally hits minimum and I top it up with 1L it's been pretty regular in how often it needs to be topped up. I've dropped the oil after having topped it up to the "maximum" level and definitely less than 5.5L comes out because all of the dropped oil can fit into 1 5L empty oil container (it's pretty much filled to the brim though). Basically what this means is: Minimum = ~4.5L Maximum = ~5.5-6.5L
