Water pump replacement... clearing codes required?

I have an ’08 135i and it seems my water pump has died. If I don’t clear the ‘shadow codes’ will the cooling fan keep blasting on high even after I replace the pump? Or will it go back to normal once the ECU sees that the pump is operational again?

Is there a way to bench test the pump to verify it’s really dead? I’m not sure I can just jump 12v to it since it’s controlled by the ECU. When I do the coolant bleed procedure in the car I don’t hear it running, but I’m not sure if it’s that loud even when working.

You'll definitely hear it when it's bleeding

This is for an e90, but the same process for the 1 series. Easy to see if the pump is working correctly...

key in, foot off of the brake, hit the start button. Foot on the gas for 10-15 seconds will activate the electric water pump.

Mine all went back to normal after WP replacement and bleeding. No codes or high fan...

I’m about to change mine, still functions okay, but I have 114k miles and I’m servicing my turbos soon and I have no idea if its original or #2. Though it has made a few buzzing noises at times.

I was wondering if it needed coding after installation? Because the new VDO pump says on the box “needs programming/updating when indicated. Observe the guidelines of the vehicle manufacturer.”

No coding required. If you have pump/fan/cooling codes, clear them and then bleed the system.
