After midnight, in the light of the full moon, if you close your eyes really tight and lick the paint around the roundel, a generously endowed fraulein appears to do your bidding....
BUT THIS IS A 1ADDICTS SECRET. Don't let it get out.

I don't know anything about BMW paint, but a Google search for "BMW paint" revealed an interesting article,
http://www.gtla.org/public/cases/bmw.html which describes how an Alabama doctor won damages plus $2million punitive damages from BMW. This case convinced BMW to begin disclosing information regarding damage to new cars. I knew that they have a disclosure policy, but I didn't know that there was a story behind it. |

I saw some show on Discovery, or TLC or one of those following a BMW Z-something through the factory. They do what pretty much everyone does these days, one coat of electrostatic primer, one of electrostatic paint, and one of clear. That's it. It really isn't like the old days where you do layer upon layer, they charge the body of the car with voltage while spraying causing the paint to polarize and distribute evenly and that's it. They bake it briefly in between steps to accelerate the cure time so it is a pretty quick process.

I have no experience with the 1 but the Titanium paint on my 330Ci is bullet proof I swear. It is one of the strongest paints I have yet experienced. I have always been very happy with the quality.
But we shall see what happens with the 1's. Paint quality and interior materials are two of the common areas where a manufacturer will cut costs. |

Taken from the BMW Lepzig Plant Site
Preparation.
To ensure that an automobile retains the customer's desired colour throughout its entire life, the paint job consists of many processes and a number of layers. Before the first of four paint layers can be applied, the body-in-white must be prepared in order to obtain a clinically pure surface. After preparation, the chassis is transported on freely movable units through different dipping lines, depending on the type of vehicle, and coated with a layer of zinc phosphate. This is the foundation for secure adherence of the anti-corrosion layer applied in the following cathodic dip bath (CDB). The CDB paint is heat-fused to the vehicle in driers. After the CDB layer is sanded, the second layer of paint, the so-called "filler", is applied. This is the primer that corrects even the tiniest surface irregularities. Colour. Only after the filler has been heat-fused and sanded can the customer's choice of colour can be applied. High voltage of 70,000 V between the paint application jets rotating at an extremely high speed and the body ensures smooth and consistent application of the paint and reduces any loss of paint to a minimum. This procedure guarantees optimum use of the paint material and helps to reduce overspray by another 30 per cent. As soon as the painted chassis have left the drier, the layer of transparent paint is applied. This last layer of clear paint greatly increases the chemical and mechanical stability and of the surface and illuminates the colour. The BMW Group is the only automobile company in the world to introduce the particularly environmentally friendly powdered clear paint process in some of its plants. This paint is applied by completely movable robots. No solvents are needed and no waste water ensues. If too much powder is sprayed, it is recaptured and reused, resulting in a degree of utilization of over 97 per cent. After an additional drying procedure, the finished chassis proceed through specially lighted inspection stations, where experienced paint specialists examine the entire body. Only then are the chassis handed over to the assembly line.
