Exclamation Upsizing from 205/50 to 225/45 for a 128i (FRONT WHEELS)

Just as the title says, I wanted to know if this is doable. The Fronts are 205/50 on the 17x7 wheel and rears are 225/45 on 17x7.5 207M wheels. I have four of the 225/45 and would want to make it a square setup for the summer.

I think it would be alright, though the tire shop I have an appt this weekend says otherwise. I just wanted to know what opinion the community has about this. If not, I guess I'm stuck with the RFTs for now.

Tires I will be using are Advan S Drives 225/45/17.

I hope you guys can help out. Thanks in advance.

I have 225/45 17 on my 17x8 et40 square winters

So for you it should be a more square shoulder. Check to see if it is safe to have a 225 on a 7 wide front.

I would Google and pay attention to Miata or Subaru forums. They have a lot of tire talk

I don't see a problem with 225/45 on a 7" rim. The tire manufacture lists this is ok, so I think it's strange the shop refused.
There will be extra sidewall flex due to the slightly narrower rim, but that wouldn't stop me.

The shop is mistaken. 225/45R17 is no problem on the front of the 1 series.

Just check the tires on Tirerack. Will tell you exactly if it is doable or not. Takes 10 seconds.

Edit: Directly from Tirerack's website:

225/45R17
91W SL 300 AA A
7-8.5"

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=yes&tab=Specs

So yes, they can safely be installed on a 7" rim. The tire shop has no idea what they are talking about.

Also, the S-Drives are not an ADVAN.

I run that size tire on mine; formerly on the original 256 wheels (17*7), with no problems; now on 17*7.5

Thanks to all the responses so far! I did that Tirerack check and the manufacturer did list that size to take 7in wheels minimum so I guess they just wanted to "watch their backs" and not be liable for any damage since they're going out of the OEM specs.

My next Q is this, will this not cause any rub in the liners at the bottom or even on the suspension as it's going to be wider than usual?

I breathed a sigh of relief that I can do this without putting myself at risk. Thanks again guys!

Pretty sure you'll be fine with 225s not rubbing anything.

People have fitted 225/40/18 on front offsets ranging from ET40 to ET49. Your 17x7" ET47 front wheels will be fine.

You're going to like your 225 square setup on the 128. I have this setup on stock staggered 263 18" wheels and like it much better than the stock 215/245 setup. I think squared 225's is the ideal tire choice for the 128.

I have square, 7" OEM rims and I run 225/45/17 front and back. As shown above "Rim Width Range" is the tirerack spec you're looking for. The S.Drives will fit.

Thanks to all the advice. I did push through with this and now run 225/45 square on staggered wheels (207M) for my 128. It feels a bit more planted and has good turn in on corners.

I was wondering though if next summer I can run 245/45 (Yokohama S-Drive again) at the rears (7.5in wheel). Will that be too much? I checked and the narrowest wheel you can put it on is 7.5 so I think it's safe to say that it's still doable. Anybody here done that on their car?

245/45 is a larger diameter than the 225/45 stock size. It is 25.6" diameter vs 24.9" for the 225/45. Its still possible to fit on the rear rims. It will look quite chunky and slightly lift the rear of the car. The 245/45 on 7.5" is a bit too much and probably Not a performance upgrade in my opinion. Maybe you can consider 235/45/17 instead. Its doubtful whether 235 on the rear is an upgrade or not, but at least its in proportion with the staggered wheel sizes.

+1

245/45R17 is too tall. 245/40R17 would be a correct diameter match, but is recommended for use on wheels 8"-9.5" wide.

^agreed on both accounts. I'm guessing 235 profile would be more functional than 245. I definitely don't want to raise the car higher in the rear or mess up the efficiency by putting more weight at the drive wheels.
