+1. Which is why I wonder why people make those judgements when one part of the car doesn't pass their standard or what they expect.

The 1M was faster than the CSL on the Top Gear track because the Top Gear track doesn't expose any of the 1's weaknesses and the ring exposes all of it's weaknesses. I think they'd be close on many courses. That lap was beyond awesome! That's how it should be driven.

i want a 1M, but the track during the M3 CSL lap was damp and it was also cold - i believe the testing was done in the fall. the 1m lap was damp, but was most likely warmer do to when the 1m was tested.

also, remember the CSL was on ps cups where as the 1m was on michelin pilot sport 2 or super sport (not sure what it comes equipped with).

in addition, this is a new stig, even amongst professional drivers, there are too many variables to even consider previous top gear seasons lap times.

http://www.streetfire.net/video/top-...csl_645108.htm

that being said, i don't see why this is news. the 135's performance #s are superior to alot of "awesome" cars of the past.

Goodness gracious...the fact that he had to think hard about drawbacks, and praised the car so much speaks wonders!! This makes my wait much harder!

Wow, never had such a response to a post in my life, was it that I dared to slag the monumental ego that is Clarkson?, or perhaps it was the use of the term "fucktard", I guess that could be inflammatory to some, especially if they happened to catch a glance of their reflection in their monitor at the time. Special mention here must go to "na335i" who took the time to compose a PM to explain just where I'd gone wrong and how unacceptable my opinion was. He must've been in a real hurry for school as his spelling really was quite poor indeed.

Just to re-iterate for those who pointed me in the direction of the factually incorrect BMW UK website:

The engine in the 1M produces 250kw, which equals 340ps, which equals 335(b)hp.

My opinion on Clarkson is just that, an opinion. Others who live in the UK will agree that as we are legally obliged to pay £150 every year for the pleasure of watching the BBC, we Brits are well within our rights to slag the corporation and its programmes off now and again.

I don't know what to say. Main reason being is that most people haven't gotten the chance to even see one in person, much less drive one.

It is such a FUN car. And because BMW made so few of them, it is an instant gem. I don't care what the car was made of, because when it comes to the driving experience, and the results, it feels better than any car I've driven (that includes the M3, and that in NO way is meant to bash it).

I hope other BMW owners feel as confident about their ride (and purchase) as I do with mine.

Lucky Mofo!
That car goes like stink, but I am afraid not a very good lawn mower as evidenced by that video.
Damn irresistible ride.

I love the CSL however I do have a burning question about its lap time around the ring.

When you bought a CSL originally if you had an international racing license you would receive the car derestricted; fact.

Was the CSL that that did the 07:50:00 derestricted?

Yes, top limiter removed. This was an option with the CSL.

No. You can find a scan of the original article here:

http://www.m3csl.de/misc_csl_supertest.php

and page 4 shows the Nordschleife lap with data. That shows 255km/h on the long straight (Döttinger Höhe).

even my wife enjoyed that review!!
The car IS that good! as for the off-roading segment it reminds me of the selected few that got to drive the pre-production samples... it was said that the only way they kept on the road was because they had the MDM on.
As for me, I kept my e90 325xi; and have developed a keen obsession with the weather forecast... i dont feel a particular need to tempt fate.

A great review. The last part was very funny. That 1M is one great car but not so sure if I would sell the M3 to buy a 1M.

It has been shown that the lap time differences is as much as 4 seconds in the wet versus the dry. So if you give the CSL 4 seconds, thats a 1.24 lap time which beats the 1.25 of the 1M. But wait, the 1M time was also on a wet/damp track so you need to subtract 1 or 2 seconds which makes them about equal around the track. You also have to remember that the CSL was a special edition of the E46 M3 and was a couple hundred pounds lighter with slightly more horsepower than the regular M3. Do the same things to the 1M ( ie. make a CSL version) and then compare to two. What is great about the 1M is that people in North America can finally get a car with the performance of the CSL without the price.
